~ AJ throwing Tess off a water tower to save himself, throwing any chance at redemption |
AJ Gilbride is the deuteragonist and eventual secondary antagonist of the 2022 horror film Barbarian.
He is a sitcom actor whose career was ruined after he was accused of rape by a costar, and who travels to one of the properties he owns at Barbary Street.
He was portrayed by Justin Long.
What Makes Him Despicable?[]
- He’s a shallow narcissist who’s mild charisma is often understated by immaturity and arrogance, deflecting any criticism or responsibly for his actions as he acts like a frat boy than a grown adult.
- He pressured his co-star into non consensual sex with drinking and while seemingly being remorseful, constantly lies about what happened and diminishes the truth, acting like she wanted to have sex and that she has a different perspective, and in his drunk call to her acts like she’s the one in the wrong.
- He constantly doesn’t listen to anyone’s advice, despite it being for his own good, and sees himself as holier than anyone around him.
- Despite feeling some deep remorse for his actions once seeing Frank’s horrific collection of the women he raped and after accidentally shooting Tess, even wanting to change himself, AJ became a coward as soon as The Mother came back, throwing Tess off the water tower so he can survive, and even though he tries to help Tess when she survived, he shallowly apologizes and acts like she was the one in the wrong, proving that AJ is incapable of changing himself.
