“ | My fellow Englishmen: tonight, our country, that which we stand for, and all we hold dear, faces a grave and terrible threat. This violent and unparalleled assault on our security will not go undefended... or unpunished. Our enemy is an insidious one, seeking to divide us and destroy the very foundation of our great nation. Tonight, we must remain steadfast. We must remain determined. But most of all, we must remain united. Those caught tonight in violation of curfew will be considered in league with our enemy and prosecuted as a terrorist without leniency or exception. Tonight, I give you my most solemn vow: that justice will be swift, it will be righteous, and it will be without mercy. | „ |

“ | Tonight, I will speak directly to these people and make the situation perfectly clear to them. The security of this nation depends on complete and total compliance. Tonight, any protester, any instigator or agitator, will be made example of! | „ |

High Chancellor Adam Sutler is one of the two main antagonists (along with Peter Creedy) of the 2006 dystopian political action film V for Vendetta, which is based on the 1988 graphic novel of the same name. He is the dictator of the fascist Norsefire government, ruling a dystopian England with an iron fist. He also plans to take over the United Kingdom by wiping out thousands of people with the St. Mary's and Three Waters virus, which caused 80,000 deaths just so he can achieve country dominatiom.
He was portrayed by the late John Hurt, who also played Harry in Pride and Lord Cotys in Hercules.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is responsible for the existence of the Saint Mary virus, which endangered England and killed over 80,000 people. He later revealed that the epidemic was a terrorist attack and he was using it to appoint himself High Chancellor of England, turning England into a fascist state.
- He is xenophobic, as he hates Jews, black people, Asian people, gay people, disabled people, and Muslims. Due to his racist views against them, Adam has those people tortured, mutilated, and/or killed. Also, Sutler assigned Prothero and Anthony Lilliman, an ordinary cleric, to work at the camp as the commander and cleric respectively, but neither did any good, with Prothero abusing, torturing and executing the inmates and Lilliman not batting an eye at any of the abuse happening there.
- Due to Sutler rewarding Prothero with a TV show revolving around him, Prothero used his show to spread Norsefire's bigoted propaganda and Lilliman employed a sex agency to send him girls to molest and rape.
- He has no problem actively oppressing minorities despite Christianity stating that all people are equal in God's eyes, proving that he doesn't really put the Christian teachings into practice.
- While he is genuinely comfy at his house, this is all because he lets his high council rule England on his behalf, forcing people into their houses with curfews, He also allows the Fingermen (the country's police force) to do whatever they want and he doesn't care about their actions, especially when numerous people are kidnapped and killed by the Fingermen. In fact, some of the victims are even threatened with rape.
- He murders TV host Gordon Deitrich all because Deitrich mocked Sutler with a comedic sketch on his farce show.
- In fact, everything about Adam Sutler is portrayed dead seriously. While Deitrich does make fun of Sutler in a considerably comedic manner, that context is completely irrelevant to Sutler's character and personality, and nothing about Adam Sutler is ever played for laughs in the slightest.
- He planned to have the country's military forces kill thousands of protesters if they storm the Houses of Parliament.
- He incriminates Creedy for the failure to capture V once he becomes a serious threat to the government.
- Even though he cries before his death, his defeat merely serves to make him look ridiculous, immature and detestable instead of remorseful or tragic. As a matter of fact, his defeat was not played for sympathy in any way despite how horrific it was. In fact, Adam is always presented as an irredeemable, cruel, ruthless, vile and hateable man and his defeat was genuinely well-deserved.
