NOTE: This page is only for the Legends version of Admiral Ozzel, as his canon counterpart does not count as a Hate Sink. |
Admiral Ozzel is a minor antagonist in the Star Wars franchise, appearing in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back as well as in spinoff material. He is an arrogant and incompetent admiral who serves under Darth Vader on his flagship, and is tasked with hunting down the Rebels.
He was played by Michael Sheard.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- As a commander in the Clone Wars, he treated his clones as expendable cannon fodder and disregarded their deaths, often pursuing reckless tactics that put his clones in danger needlessly and also endangered several Jedi who were forced to draw fire away from them. He even ordered his troops to open fire when the Jedi were in the line of fire. Despite his recklessness, Ozzel then claimed sole credit for the victory.
- He is prejudiced towards clones, saying it doesn't matter if they die because more could always be bred to replace them. When criticized by Plo Koon for this, he arrogantly responds that the Jedi's concerns are irrelevant because he was given his command by Palpatine himself.
- He cowardly surrendered to the Separatists and betrayed the Jedi's plans to them to save his own life, claiming afterwards that this was justified.
- He supported the rise of the Empire and court-martialed Han Solo for saving Chewbacca from slavery.
- He oversaw a massacre of Rebel sympathizers on Teardrop, killing all the residents of a town, starting with the aliens.
- He covers up the desertion of a group of stormtroopers out of fear that this could keep him from being promoted to Admiral, even considering murdering a superior officer who he thought was investigating him.
- He was promoted to Admiral and assigned to the Executor only because of a lack of more competent officers and his family connections, with many Imperials finding his rise inexplicable given his incompetence. In fact, his superiors had given him this position because they believed (wrongly) that he wasn't stupid enough to argue with Vader.
- When assigned to the Executor, he shows himself to be an arrogant and incompetent officer who has no respect for his subordinates and belittles them, and is even disdainful toward his superior Darth Vader.
- He dismisses Captain Piett's assessment that the Rebel base is on Hoth, then backtalks Vader when he sides with Piett.
- In a radio dramatization, he states prior to his death that with the Executor at his disposal, he is now the ultimate power in the universe, showing an incredible amount of arrogance and disregard for his superior.
- He botches the attack on Hoth by having the fleet emerge from hyperspace right outside the system, alerting the Rebels to their presence and allowing them to raise a defense shield, forcing Vader to resort to a costly ground campaign. As a result, this leads to Vader executing him through force Grip and promoting Captain Firmus Piett to his position.
Trivia[]
- Interestingly, his Legends characterization is similar to Pong Krell as both show bigotry towards the clones under their command and pursue reckless tactics that put them in harm's way.
