Adolfo Pirelli is an supporting antagonist of the theater musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
He was portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen in the film adaptation.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is incredibly arrogant and a liar, falsely claiming to have been a barber for both the Pope and the King of Naples, declaring himself "the king of the barbers and the barber of kings". In most portrayals, he is shown to be a terrible barber, with his makeshift customer howling in pain as he cuts them while shaving them. It should be noted that some portrayals, such as the movie, make him a decent barber, but still nowhere near the gifted man he makes himself out to be.
- He is a conman, selling what he claims to be a product that can cause miracle hair growth. In truth, this "miracle elixer", as he calls it, is a mixture of "piss and ink". Aside from being completely useless for growing hair, rubbing ink and urine on your skin can be bad for it, causing things like pimples to sprout up. To try and trick people into believing that it really works, he has his assistant, Toby, wear a long wig.
- He treats Toby awfully. When sharpening his razor to prepare for his contest against Sweeney Todd, he repeatedly accidentally nicks Toby's fingers with it, and he shows absolutely no concern, not even apologizing or getting any bandages for him. When he loses the contest, he takes his anger out on Toby and beats him despite him not doing anything. In some versions of the musical (excluded from the film adaptation), a second contest is held for who can give the quickest/least painful tooth pull (in those times, the jobs of barbers, doctors, and dentists often overlapped). When Pirelli can't find someone who needs a tooth pulled, he punches Toby in the mouth hard enough to knock a tooth loose and then proceeds to try and yank it out. On a side note, all versions that feature this second contest show him to be a terrible tooth puller. Toby himself notes that Pirelli is good with lashings, indicating that Pirelli whips him with something (possibly a belt). In the musical, Toby is a mentally handicapped young man, while in the film, he's a child.
- During his contest, he wasts time bragging about his nonexistent exploits and skills, eventually stopping shaving all together and only focusing on singing. Meanwhile, Todd actually focuses on his work and easily wins. This proves how incompetent he is.
- He is foolish enough to try to blackmail Todd, an escaped prison convict whose job gives him access to razors, and decides to try and confront Todd with his intentions in Todd's own barber shop which grants him easy access to his razors. He doesn't even bring any weapons with him. This leads to his death.
