~ Alfrid and Bard about the Company of Thorin Oakenshield |
Alfrid Lickspittle is a minor antagonist in Sir Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, serving as major antagonist in The Desolation Of Smaug and The Battle Of The Five Armies. He is an extremely cowardly man of Lake-town, and the assistant deputy and councilor of the Master of Laketown.
He was portrayed by Ryan Gage.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- Helped his master into controlling Laketown and its resources, starving the people. Hence, when Bard arrives at Laketown with barrels of fish (secretly containing Bilbo and the Dwarves), he orders his men to empty the barrels into the water, only for Bard threatening him to tell the people that the Master is emptying the resources. Angry, Alfrid eventually let him pass.
- He and the master agreed to let Thorin and his Company take back Erebor only because it would bring them more gold. It's also very dangerous because the dragon Smaug lives there, and results in him attacking Laketown when he learns that they funded the dwarves' mission.
- Although he's genuinely protective of the Master of Laketown, he is repeatedly accused of only working alongside the Master of Laketown out of pragmatism for a reason.
- Assaulted and arrested Bard while he was being chased by Laketown's guards, locking him up for no apparent reason. This also put Bard's family in danger of being killed by Smaug.
- Even if he was betrayed by his master by being pushed into the water while trying to escape Laketown, it isn't played for sympathy.
- He is manipulative, as when Bard became chief of Laketown's people after he successfully killed Smaug, he started supporting him to be well-seen by the people even though he always hated him. And even when he saved his life twice, Alfrid denied him an ounce of gratitude.
- When Bard gave him a chance of redemption by helping the people setting up in Dale, he did none of that and even forced an old woman to carry heavy wood while watching.
- Every time he was given a chance to redeem himself he wasted it.
- When Gandalf arrived, he yelled at him and told him to leave while he didn't know him at all.
- He is a coward, as shown when the men were preparing to fight against Azog the Defiler's army of Orcs, he disguised himself as a woman to avoid fighting.
- Even if he's played for laughs most of the time and doesn't pass the major baseline, Alfrid is, at his core, a greedy, selfish, rude, deceitful, and traitorous coward.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the four characters from Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth movies to be Hate Sinks, alongside the Master of Laketown, Denethor, and the Mouth of Sauron.
- He is, alongside Tauriel, often cited by critics as one of the worst parts of the trilogy, due to how obnoxious he is and getting too much screentime compared to better-liked characters. Even the Master had less screentime and was hated solely for reasons the screenwriters intended.
