Amon Goeth is the main antagonist of the 1993 film called Schindler's List and the Book called Schindler's Ark, which was one of Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning films. His character was based on a similarly named Nazi officer named Amon Goeth.
He was portrayed by Ralph Fiennes.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink[]
- Following a Jewish forewoman's request to improve her poor structure, Goeth murders her.
- Liquidates the Kraków Ghetto, persecuting and murdering the Jews living there in the process.
- For sport, he murders Jews from his balcony by shooting them to death.
- When one of his Jewish prisoners escapes, he murders 25 of them in revenge.
- Sends children to the gas chambers and then laughs sadistically at their crying parents as Schindler gives them water, thinking he's giving them false hope.
- When a young boy fails to clean his bathtub, Goeth murders him.
- Proves his misogyny when he lusts after and assaults Helen Hirsch, his Jewish maid. Afterwards, he blames her his own lust and brutally beats her.
- Displayed no regret for his actions and continued to claim his allegiance to Adolf Hitler when he's about to be hanged.
- His loyalty to Hitler is purely pragmatic, as it allow him to crush people and be above them. Even him praising Hitler before his death is more to spite his executioners, due to them feeling disgust for the Nazis and wishing to see him beg for mercy before being hanged, succeeding at ticking them off.
Trivia[]
- Goeth's real life counterpart is actually even worse, as he also fed prisoners to his dogs while they were still alive, shot children with his sniper rifle, used a torture cell built under his house, and killed more than 500 people personally. This lead to most of his crimes being toned down for the movie, mainly because of the time constraints and because Steven Spielberg thought that viewers'll think that his brutality isn't realistic.
- Ironically, some of the movies critics thought the crimes presented in the movie never happened for the same reason Spielberg toned down his villainy.
- This portrayal of Amon Goeth was so true to the cruelty of the real life individual that Holocaust survivors who had been invited to watch the film by Steven Spielberg felt uncomfortable when watching his scenes.
- Additionally, one of Schindler's freed employees, likely Mila Pfefferberg, was invited to the movie set. And when she saw Fiennes in costume, she suffered a panic attack because he looked so much like the real Amon Goeth.
