Andrei Strasser is the main antagonist of the 1998 film Mighty Joe Young, a remake of the 1949 film of the same name.
He is a sadistic and coldhearted poacher who becomes obsessed with finding and killing the titular gorilla after having two of his right hand fingers bitten off by him, albeit defensively.
He was played by Rade Šerbedžija.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He’s a poacher who kills and sells endangered animals for money.
- He kills Joe’s mother and then tries to capture the infant Joe as he’s worth more alive. When Joe bites his finger off in self-defense, Strasser tells his accomplice Garth to kill him.
- He shoots and fatally wounds Dr. Ruth Young when she tries to rescue Joe, and when Garth suggests they should help her Strasser coldly refuses.
- He runs a fake wildlife preserve to scam people into leaving animals there, which he then sells on the black market.
- He taunts an adult Joe to provoke him into a rage, resulting in Joe going on a rampage that injures numerous people and results in calls for him to be euthanized.
- He manipulates Jill into giving him Joe by offering to give him a better home at his fake preserve, intending to sell Joe off piece by piece.
- He tries to shoot Jill when she realizes who he is, then orders an innocent man out of his car at gunpoint so he can pursue Jill.
- He again tries to shoot Jill at a carnival, which even horrifies Garth, and shows no remorse when his shot misses and ignites a deadly fire, endangering countless people. He then knocks Garth out when he rightfully calls Strasser a murderer.
- He holds Jill at gunpoint and gloats that she’ll meet her mother in hell, and is only stopped from killing her by Joe’s intervention.
