Andrew Diggle, nicknamed Andy, is a major antagonist in the Arrowverse, serving as a mentioned character in the first three seasons, one of the two secondary antagonists in Season 4 of Arrow and a posthumous antagonist for the rest of the series. He was the younger brother of John Diggle and a celebrated soldier long thought to be dead only to be revealed to be working for H.I.V.E and to have not been the man people thought he was.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He pretended to reject Joyner’s offer of drug smuggling and war profiteering in front of John, but quickly accepted the opportunity behind John’s back. When John saw him with Joyner and confronted him, he lied that he was just teaching Joyner blackjack tricks and guilted John and made him feel horrible about distrusting and even made him apologize.
- He pretended to be a war hero fighting for freedom and helping the people of Afghanistan when in reality he was a petty crimelord, drug dealer, and weapons dealer who couldn’t care less about his brother, fellow soldiers, or the people of Afghanistan.
- While HIVE recruits were often brainwashed with neuro-blockers, Andy willingly joined Darhk and HIVE, and agreed to take the neuro-blockers and even after they wore off, he remained evil and committed his worst actions, proving that he was always evil of his own volition.
- When John asked him if all his horrific crimes he has done in Afghanistan listed in HIVE’s file were true, he coldly stated it was true before shoving the file back out to fall on the ground.
- He didn’t even look at the pictures of his wife or child when John put them in his cell and had no concern for what happened to them even when John told him his wife cried for months when she thought he was killed and that his son grew up without a father, proving that if he did care for them, it was long gone by now and this was after the neuro-blockers in his system wore off, proving it was his own completely genuine reaction.
- He sadistically smiled and stated that the U.S. was a free country…for now when John called out Damien Darhk for leading a cult and when John tried to reason with him and said this wasn’t him, he mocked John and told him that what he really failed to see who he truly was the entire time.
- He “complimented” John when he brutally beat him to a pulp for info after Darhk ordered a hit on Oliver and Felicity and mockingly asked if he got some “thrill” out of beating.
- He infamously revealed to have faked his redemption and to have been working for Drank all along, with every act of kindness and growth having been a total lie to manipulate Team Arrow to gain their trust and lead them into traps and distractions so Malcolm Merlyn could get the Khushu idol and so he could steal the final piece from Oliver to give to Darhk to allow Darhk to regain his powers and escape prison.
- This makes him directly responsible for Darhk’s murder of the Black Canary moments later which unlike Darhk, he never showed any remorse for.
- He has fanatical loyalty to Darhk at best, not genuine care for HIVE itself or their mission considering he went behind the organization’s backs to break Darhk out of prison and was complicit in Darhk’s murder of other HIVE leaders.
- He led John to a trap and ambushed him, taunting him over how he failed to save Laurel and when John told him not to say a word about her, he simply told John “make me”.
- He captured John and tied him up before proceeding to sadistically torture him, bragging how John’s daughter wouldn’t have to grow up with him and callously brushing off John’s attempt to remind him of his family, not even being able to say their names and instead told John that HIVE was his family now.
- When John broke free and handcuffed him to the wall, he tried to provoke John to kill him “for Laurel” and taunted John when he couldn’t do it that Laurel would be so disappointed in him and it was revealed that John’s escape was simply a ruse to plant a tracker on him to find out the location of his wife and daughter.
- He tried to run away the second he lost the upper hand and taunted John that he probably regretted not pulling the trigger the first time he had him at his mercy. He then smugly taunted John that he would find a way to escape and sadistically bragged that he would find and kill John’s wife and young daughter, and that they wouldn't be the only women and children in his war and mocked John for his past willingness to protect Afghans that he never knew, but lacked the willingness to kill him to protect his wife and daughter, finally provoking John into killing him.
- Yet when John did, he had a shocked look on his face as if he thought he didn’t deserve to die and was a victim.
- Overall, he is an irredeemable and fanatical psychopath who abandoned any and all initial heroism or care he may have had for his family and a treacherous backstabber who revealed himself to just be a sadistic, smug, and gaslighting traitor in the end.
