Andrew "Andy" Harper is a supporting antagonist in the Stranger Things franchise.
He is a student at Hawkins High as well as a member of the Tigers basketball team who serving as one of two right-hand henchmen to Jason Carver upon helping the latter in his manhunt against Eddie Munson. Pettily assuming Jason's legacy is being dishonored when it isn't, he goes out of his way to make Dustin Henderson's life a living hell.
He is portrayed by Clayton Royal Johnson.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- When he heard of a student's death, he made fun of them and as a result offended everyone in the room. While he didn't know the student was Jason's girlfriend, Chrissy Cunningham, this shows he was already a bad person even before the manhunt and only apologized for the insult when he found out that it was Chrissy.
- He frequently antagonized and insulted Lucas Sinclair, even before he turned against them, just because of his familiarity with the Hellfire Club.
- He joined Jason and his group, in his manhunt against the Hellfire Club.
- He turned against Lucas when he tried to defend his friends.
- He went after Lucas's younger sister, Erica Sinclair, and tackled her while threatening to break her arms, thus showing that he is willing to hurt kids.
- Him being kicked in the groin and then knocked out by Erica with her flashlight, along with her calling him a meathead, are played for satisfaction.
- He threatened Dustin in the hallway at school and ripped his shirt while taunting him that Hellfire Club is over until Lucas (using his new popularity), Mike and Will arrived and confronted him, forcing Andy to back off. Although Lucas reminding him of how his sister kicked him in the groin, and making it clear that if he ever threatened Dustin again, he'll kick his balls so hard "they'll bust like water balloons." is comedic, this is non-detracting as his actions are taken seriously.
- After Dustin pranked him with a corn snake in his locker, he killed the poor reptile and vandalised Eddie's grave with the message “Burn in Hell” written in blood.
- He and his jock friends ambushed Dustin at the grave. While Dustin briefly blinded them with cleaning chemicals and held on his own, they quickly overpowered him, beat him badly, and leave him on the ground bruised and seemingly unconscious. As a result, Dustin then misses the planned “crawl” mission, and most of his friends have no idea that Andy’s group is responsible. Dustin even lied to Steve, Mike and Lucas about it, claiming he "fell off his bike", though Steve sees through it given how severely Dustin was beat up and knows the jocks were responsible.
- Of all the teenage antagonists in the show, he's one of the most unlikable, as while Billy was arguably worse, he still had a tragic past and had a redemptive ending in season 3, Two is a tragic character due to being raised by Brenner, Tommy and Carol did love each other and Angela's just an ordinary bully, who was meant to be seen as sympathetic when she got hit with a skate in the head. He also lacks most of the redeeming factors his teammates have, with Jason being a tragic anti-villain and Patrick being a neutral character who is affable, has standards, and has a tragic background. The only other teenager who was arguably worse is Troy Walsh, who tried to force Mike to jump off a cliff to his death and mutilate Dustin; he threatened to cut out his baby teeth if Mike didn't comply
- He is a Karma Houdini as he didn’t receive any comeuppance aside from being fought off by Erica in the Season 4 finale. While Dustin, Steve and Jonathan do not punish him for all the hell he put on the former, it was mostly because Vecna as the greater threat and the trio needed to end him.
- While he graduated alongside Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Max and remained respectfully silent during Dustin's speech and applauded Dustin for his graduation speech, there's no indication that he redeemed himself, and might only be because he did not want to start a fight in public.
Trivia[]
- Andy is the only teenage antagonist from Season 4 to be Hate Sink, while Jason, Two, and Angela fall into Likability Scaling Purgatory. Jason is far too sympathetic and well-intentioned to be a Hate Sink. Angela, though widely hated, is meant to be seen as sympathetic after getting hit with a skate to the head. Two serves as a scapegoat due to his shocking torture by Brenner and gruesome murder by Vecna, both played for horror.
- He and Lt. Colonel Sullivan are the only Season 4 antagonists that are Hate Sinks. Vecna cannot qualify due to his many ‘Evil is Cool’ traits and the added sympathy from The First Shadow, while Warden Melnikov is no longer considered one because he lacks a truly hateable personality and mainly serves as a plot device in the Russian storyline.
