| “ | Six months ago Gotham had the lowest crime rate in the nation. Yesterday, we were declared "The World's Scariest City"! | „ |
Angel Rojas or better known as Chief Rojas, was a major character of the animated show The Batman. He stood as the chief of police in Gotham City. He viewed Batman as a threat, to the point that he wanted to arrest him.
He was voiced by Edward James Olmos in "The Bat in the Belfry", and by Jesse Corti in his later appearances.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Rojas views Batman as a criminal, despite the fact that Batman brought down the crime boss Rupert Thorne and media stating that with his help, crime rating have significantly reduced, showing his ungrateful attitude. This also brought him into conflict with Detective Ethan Bennett, who's a supporter of Batman.
- After Ethan Bennett was rescued by Batman from the Joker, Rojas still viewed Batman as a criminal to the media and taking the Batman's credit of capturing the Joker and that made Ethan wanting to argue because of the ordeal he was put through.
- He also discharges Ethan Bennett from the police force, and that put Detective Yin, who is grateful to Batman for rescuing her partner despite initial distrust of the vigilante, at odds with Rojas.
- He is also indirectly responsible for Ethan Bennett's descent into villainy after becoming Clayface, which made him lose everything: his friendship with Bruce Wayne, his reputation as a detective, and his normal life. Though he would eventually be cured, redeemed, and regain Bruce's trust.
- Rojas on the news told them that his police force got the credit for capturing the Joker except for Ethan, who overheard it as Clayface, and this caused Clayface to target him for being referred as a freak and wanting him dead.
- Despite Batman and Yin saving him from Clayface, he still views the latter as a threat.
- During the hunt for the Riddler, Rojas proved himself inept at solving puzzles or clues in contrast to Batman & Yin’s skills and teamwork which enables they're capture of the Riddler.
- After Batman stopped Mr. Freeze’s and Firefly’s plan to turn Gotham City into a permanent winter in order to loot the urban area afterwards, capturing and delivering them for the Gotham police, Rojas still orders his men to arrest Batman, but the police force choose to applaud for Batman instead, making Rojas the only ingrate of Batman’s heroism.
- While he remained during Clayface’s trial, Rojas clearly deemed him a criminal that he wanted him declared guilty, but the judge stated he was declared innocent after many witnesses defended Ethan for being a victim of The Joker, much to his dismay.
- When Joker, Penguin and Riddler caused havoc around the city and declared war on each other by defeating Batman; the winner getting to rule Gotham should they see the face beneath the mask, Rojas saw that them and Batman in need of capture, proving how shortsighted he is.
- When Rojas discovered that Detective Yin is working alongside The Batman, he revoked her status as a policemen, having her arrested, not before he used her as a trap to lure Batman. However, Batman managed to evade Gotham police along with Yin.
- After Batman and Yin managed to defeat and capture the three super felons, Rojas planned to arrest her and then Batman. Commissioner Gordon, who is a strong supporter of Batman and sees his work does good to Gotham City, manages to pull his rank and makes some serious points toward Rojas, forcing the latter to begrudgingly accept Yin back in the police force, and to his dismay, forbid from arresting Batman.
- Even though he was never seen again after the incident, it's likely he was fired or transferred for his jingoistic belligerence, either which for the best since he hindered GCPD from being able to protect Gotham at its fullest.
