Hate Sink Wiki
NOTE: This is only about the film version of the character, as the book version of Galt doesn't count as a Hate Sink.

~ Galt to Rambo.

Arthur "Art" Galt is the secondary antagonist of the 1982 film First Blood, which is based on the 1972 novel of the same name. He is a cruel Deputy Sergeant of the town of the Ligget County Sheriff Department. He is even more brutal and sadistic than the town's sheriff and main antagonist, Will Teasle, as he is seen as a cruel and sadist who enjoys abusing his power to show people that he does not like who's boss.

He was portrayed by the late Jack Starrett.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • Along with Teasle and other deputies, Galt regularly abuses his position as a police officer to do whatever he wants.
  • Similar to Teasle, he harbors a hatred of hippies and drifters.
  • When Rambo came to the police station, Galt threatened to break his hand when he tried to resist.
  • He attacked Rambo with his nightstick, ordering one of the deputies to wash him with a high pressure, and then tried to have him shaved as well. All of this induced Rambo's trauma of being a P.O.W. in the Vietnam War, causing him to break out.
  • When Rambo beat up him and other deputies and escaped to the streets, Galt tried to shoot him with a rifle before Teasle intervened him. Had Teasle not stopped Galt, he would've likely hurt an innocent.
  • After spotting Rambo from a helicopter, Galt starts shooting at him, completely ignoring Teasle's orders to bring him in alive. When the pilot told him to stop it, Galt threatened to kill him if he don't keep the helicopter straight.
  • His death is well deserved for his harsh abuse on Rambo, aside from Teasle (and his wife in a deleted scene), no one mourned for his death.
  • Although Teasle cared for him since he's his best friend, Galt doesn't seem to care about the latter as he disregarded his orders to take Rambo alive. If anything, it's implied Galt is only friends with him so he could do whatever he want as a cop.
  • Out of all antagonists of the film, Galt is obviously the least sympathetic one, as Teasle showed some insecurities as well as standards, the other deputies merely doing their jobs (even if they were being jerks), and Galt on the other hand is just a sadistic and cruel man who abuses others for his own amusement.

Trivia[]

  • Only the film version of Galt counts as a Hate Sink, since the book version is much more reasonable and neither sadistic nor abusive on Rambo.
