Assef is the main antagonist of Khaled Hosseini's 2003 novel The Kite Runner and its 2007 film adaptation.
He was portrayed by Abdul Salam Yusoufzai as an adult and by Elham Ehsas as a teenager in the film.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He was already quite a sleazy asshole even as a teenager as he used to belittle and bully Amir and Hassan for no real reason.
- He is a huge fan of Hitler and greatly admires his Nazism ideologies.
- He looks down on the Hazaras and makes it pretty clear that much like his predecessor (Adolf) he plans to commit genocide on them.
- He considers Pashtuns inherently "superior" to the Hazaras, much like Hitler viewed Aryans as racially superior to Jews and Slavs.
- One day when Hassan wins a kite and goes through an alley, Assef and his companions corner him and demand the kite. When Hassan refuses, Assef proceeds to have him pinned down and then anally rapes him. His reason for doing it was to "teach him a lesson about how the world works".
- He is first seen as an adult stoning a woman accused of adultery to death in a ring in front of spectators.
- As an adult, he becomes even more depraved and vile. He runs a child sex trafficking ring with it being implied that he sexually abuses or even tortures the children.
- While leading his genocidal campaign, he guns down Hassan and his wife when they refuse to vacate their homes, and then out of spite for Hassan questioning his authority, kidnaps his son Sohrab and turns him into his personal sex slave.
- He taunts Amir over the death of Hassan and even calls him a coward as that what he is good at.
- Him getting nicked in the eye with a rock by Sohrab is played for cathartic satisfaction.
- Unlike most of the other Taliban members whom are well-intentioned extremists, Assef is anything but this and is merely a sociopathic bigot with no redeeming qualities who revels in the idea of raping or murdering people whom he views as inferior to keep them under his thumb.
Trivia[]
- In the novel, Assef is presented as honorable which is a quality that was outright omitted in the film version.
