Atsushi Kanamoto, also known as Johnny Black or Joe, is a secondary antagonist from the Sword Art Online light novel and anime franchise, serving as a secondary antagonist for the Phantom Bullet arc and the opening antagonist of Alicization Arc. He is one of the ten thousand players who were trapped in Sword Art Online, and a member of the infamous guild, Laughing Coffin.
He was voiced by Ryōta Ōsaka in Japanese, and Alejandro Saab in the English dub, who also voices Kaigaku in Demon Slayer.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Created the poisons for the Laughing Coffin guild with the express purpose of using them to incapacitate people to torture them to death, most likely contributing to Vassago's already high kill count in SAO.
- Committed player-killing in Sword Art Online after PoH convinced him all the murders will be blamed on Akihiko Kayaba.
- Has forced players he's captured to kill each other before killing the last man standing out of sadism.
- Joins Shouchi Shinkawa's Death Gun plot so he can murder again to satisfy his bloodlust.
- Nearly kills Kirito and Asuna, poisoning the former and resulting in him having to be healed by the Soul Translator, thus being directly responsible for Alicization Arc.
- Even as a Pure Evil villain, he lacks Vassago/PoH's and Shouichi/XaXa's charisma and evil-is-cool moments, instead being a gleefully-unrepentant sadist that commits utter enormities with no remorse and will participate in any activity that will allow him to murder people. Also unlike Vassago/PoH and Shouichi/XaXa, who at least have a freudian excuse, he is completely detestable.
