| “ | Just look at my nephew. It's not even 10-o'-clock and he can barely keep his eyes open. And this degenerate is who they entrust with the wellbeing of a mentally ill child. | „ |
| ~ Jane insulting her nephew and niece, while also referring to Abby as "mentally ill". |
Jane Schmidt, also referred to as Aunt Jane, is the tertiary antagonist of the 2023 supernatural horror movie Five Nights at Freddy's, based on the video game franchise of the same name. She is the aunt of Michael and Abby Schmidt that is obsessed with taking Abby in custody over Michael forcefully just to get a monthly check from the government.
She was portrayed by Mary Stuart Masterson.
What makes her a Hate Sink?[]
- Wants to gain custody of Abby not to give her a better life, but for the monthly checks she'd receive from the government.
- She constantly criticizes Mike over his inability to raise Abby properly. While she is somewhat right, this is completely hypocritical on her end since she only wants Abby for the money she'd get.
- Not to mention we do get a glimpse of what it'd be like if she were to raise Abby, as when babysitting her while Mike goes to work, Jane chooses to watch television rather than putting her well being first and checking on her when she shuts herself inside her room.
- She pulls the victim card by shedding crocodile tears in order to convince Abby's teacher to side with her.
- Outright calls her own niece "mentally ill" to make herself look good.
- She treats her lawyer, Doug like a subordinate to her, such as forcing him to sit down at the cafe table when he's about to leave. She does this again when Jeff suggests killing Mike.
- On that note while she shuts down Jeff’s proposal, she calls such an idea “tempting".
- She’s very rude to the waiter at Sparky’s, Ness, despite his overly nice and chipper attitude. She also refuses to let anyone order anything while they were there.
- Calls Max (Abby's babysitter) a "miserable failure" for being unable to find any sort of dirt at Mike's house that they could use against him. She also refuses to pay her and her brother Jeff because of it even though they technically did what they were told to do.
- She hires Max, Jeff, Hank and Carl to trash the pizzeria to get Mike fired. While it was Jeff's idea, Jane forced them to go through with it, making her partially responsible for their extremely brutal deaths. However Jeff did deserve it.
- She's very greedy, as mentioned above she only wants Abby's custody for the money and gives a flimsy excuse as to why she shouldn't pay Jeff and Max. On top of that, she decides to only give the pair a smaller sum of money of what they were initially bargaining for if they trashed the pizzeria.
- Her being killed by Golden Freddy is played for satisfaction and isn't played for sympathy at all (However, her death is not directly mentioned, which leaves her fate unknown).
- She's despised by almost everyone she interacts with due to her rude and condescending demeanor, most notably Mike and Abby. Even Abby's teacher and her own goons are put off by her for these reasons. The fact that no one mourns or even mentions her following her death also speaks volumes.
- Jane was significantly responsible for allowing the events of the film to unfold. Her desire to take Abby into her custody motivated Mike to take the night guard job at Freddy's. Her agreement to send Max, Jeff, Hank and Carl to ransack the pizzeria caused Max's death, forcing Mike to bring Abby with him to work. This in turn resulted in Abby befriending the animatronics, luring her and Mike into (almost) becoming victims of William Afton on the fifth night.
- Many fans consider her overall unnecessary to the story, laughably evil and a waste of time. Not to mention the lengths she went just to gain custody of Abby for a measly check from the state is ridiculous as she could have been jailed if her crimes were discovered. Additionally she was willing to waste over $1000 in her scheme putting in question as to why she needs the money to begin with.
