“ | Art... Dance... Aren't you ashamed of pursuing such frivolous and meaningless activities in this land of knowledge and reason? Our Archon created the utopia that is Sumeru City for all scholars who sought validity, verity, and truth... while people like you wish to defile it. | „ |
~ Grand Sage Azar scolding Nilou for performing Dance of Sabzeruz. |
Azar is a major antagonist of Genshin Impact who serves as the main antagonist of Chapter III of the Archon Quests. He was a heretical and fun-hating Grand Sage of the Sumeru Akademiya and Sage of the Sumeru Akademiya who conspired with Il Dottore along with four other Sages to replace Lesser Lord Kusanali through a God-Creation plan to ascend Scaramouche into a deity.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
“ | Creating a god... Yes, we are using human wisdom to create a god! If humanity cannot attain omniscience and omnipotence, then we shall create a god to reveal them! This is the pinnacle of human wisdom. We shall regain a god's guidance at long last. No longer will we flounder in the interminable void of consciousness and knowledge. Even Irminsul will be freed from its plight. For our nation of scholars, this is the ultimate aspiration — no cost is too great to realize it. | „ |
~ Azar revealing his plans to create a new God of Wisdom, Jnagarbha Day |
- Without redeeming qualities, he is simply an egotistical and hypocritical bad boss who basically treats his subordinates and even the Fatui as disposable once they outlived their usefulness.
- His hatred for the arts and soft science extends to the point that he even sought to ban all public performances in Sumeru City without approval by the Akademiya in the name of them being “frivolous, meaningless activities in the land or utopia.”
- Condescendingly tells Nilou that she is not qualified to debate with him while physically and mentally projecting himself onto her for her connection to the Sabzeruz Festival and Lesser Lord Kusanali then telling her to “celebrate the the birth of that god to her heart’s content,” in spite of that being impossible with the venue vacated under his orders.
- Forcing Nilou to loop the memory would seemingly be unnecessary for the samsara to work as he could choose a happier memory, but Azar decides to do so out of spite and sadistic enjoyment.
- While he is not entirely responsible for detaining Lesser Lord Kusanali since the past Sages did it 500 years ago, he is willing to support their belief that Kusanali is inferior to Rukkhadevata with the "never found the body" excuse even though she actually died.
- Traps the whole of Sumeru City in a dream just to extract dreams from the populace to aid with the God-Creation Plan to apostatise Scaramouche into becoming their god in place of Rukkhadevata.
- This went to the point that he almost had several people killed including Dunyarzad Homayani who was no longer able to sustain the constant extraction of dreams.
- Tries to have the radical Eremites become the main scapegoat for the operation of kidnapping innocent mad scholars for Forbidden Knowledge to help their God-Creation Plan by manipulating them to think that their deity King Deshret was revived.
- While he does see Cyno with respect, he constantly forces him to serve him with no questions and even tried to spy on his Akasha logs, leading to his defection from the Akademiya.
- Despite shooting down Siraj’s hive mind thesis due to violating the cardinal sins of the Akademiya, he eventually subverts it by breaking them during the third chapter of the Archon Quests.
- Has Il Dottore detained Setaria before she could do anything after the Traveler and Nahida convince her to betray Azar.
- Blames Kusanali for a lack of progress within the Akademiya, even if they could have tried to stand on their own two feet for it.
- Upon being cornered in the Sanctuary of Surasthana, he cowardly begs to Cyno with the excuse that his high rank in the hierarchy allows him to be above the law, only for Cyno to leave him in the mercy of the Dendro Archon, leading to Kusanali's release.
- Plots to betray the Fatui while making a backup of Scaramouche’s memories so that he could have complete control over him.
- While he was surprised at the sight of Kusanali and the Traveler saving Irminsul, it was more towards how he was unable to continue with his plans, while not even redeeming on his own volition due to Greater Lord Rukkhadevata being erased from Irminsul.
Trivia[]
- Grand Sage Azar (آزر) is named from the father of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) in The Qur'an. He is known for rejecting his son's faith to Allah and the maker of idols. Coincidentally, Azar in Genshin Impact is basically committing shirk towards Greater Lord Rukkhadevata by rejecting Lesser Lord Kusanali, to the point he has no qualms with helping Il Dottore to create the new God of Wisdom.
- Both Grand Sage Azar and Fortune Academy Dean from Honkai Star Rail were Hoyoverse hate-sinks who were obstructive deans.
