King Balon Greyjoy IX is one of the secondary antagonists of the dark fantasy TV series Game of Thrones, an adaptation of George R.R Martin's fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire.

He was portrayed by Patrick Malahide.

What makes him Hated?[]

  • He embarks on two open rebellions against the monarchy (Robert's/Joffrey's) only to become king and revive the Iron Men's "old ways" of raping and pillaging everything in their path.
    • Both rebellions ended in many deaths and in the first rebellion also in the deaths of his two sons and the capture of another son by the Starks. He also bitterly blamed everything on Starks.
  • He is hostile to his sons as well as his daughter when she tells Theon that they were both abused by their father.
  • When Theon is sent on behalf of Robb Stark to let him be King of the Iron Islands for the second time, he decides to raid the North just out of anger that his son is being turned in the name of another king.
  • He is directly responsible for Theon's fall to villainy and his quest to conquer Winterfell.
  • When he receives a letter from Ramsay Bolton demanding that he stop pillaging the North or Theon will suffer further torture, Balon doesn't care as Theon is useless to him now he is castrated and cannot continue the Greyjoy line, even insulting his manhood.
  • After Yara's attempt to save Theon failed, Balon was upset at the loss of useful people, not caring that she was trying to save his son.
  • When Deepwood Motte, the last castle the Ironborn held in the north, fell, Balon refused to give up despite Yara's pragmatic advice.
  • Although he seems to treat Yara better than Theon, he does not hesitate to threaten to disinherit her if she disobeys his orders.
    • Due to his actions, he most deserved his death at the hands of his brother Euron and did not become a scapegoat for that. almost no one even cried for it (except for his sons).
