There are ten reasons people die: wrath, greed, madness, intoxication, destruction, despair, nihilism, sacrifice, loneliness... My aspect of death is age. It is the most powerful aspect of all. Everyone must face it eventually.
~ Barragan stating his aspect of death to Soi Fon.
Insects, insects, insects! Shinigami, humans, Hollows, Arrancar, all of their differences and strife, will, freedom, beasts, plants, the moon and stars and sun - all of it is meaningless! There is but one absolute in this world, and that is my power! Everything outside of that is as tiny and meaningless as an insect! It is only natural for I, wielder of the ultimate power over all, to hold dominion over the world!! Among a number of competing powers, equality can never be found. But observe! In these hollow eyes of mine, the lives you bear are no greater than those of mere ants!
~ Baraggan Louisenbairn to Suì-Fēng and Hachigen Ushōda.

Baraggan Louisenbairn is a major antagonist in the anime/manga series Bleach. He is an Arrancar that serves as the 2nd Espada of Sōsuke Aizen's army. His death aspect symbolizes "Senescence"".

Prior to becoming an Arrancar in Aizen's army, he lived in Hueco Mundo as the God-King and inhabited Las Noches, until he was dethroned by Aizen himself in a humiliating battle he lost. Since then, Baraggan has held a grudge against Aizen and has secretly plotted to turn against him one day.

He was voiced by the late Shozo Iizuka in Japanese and by Steve Kramer in English.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

In General[]

  • He has a gigantic deal of arrogance, due to the fact that he used to be king of Hueco Mundo. His arrogance is so obnoxious, you will wonder how Aizen puts up with him.
    • He is so arrogant that he doesn't consider that he has any weaknesses.
  • He cares nothing for his Fraccion and shown his failure intolerance when he heartlessly called his subordinates who died as useless fools.
  • He constantly calls those weaker than him "Ants".

Background[]

  • Before getting conscripted by Aizen, he already was a horrible person, as he was a tyrant who wouldn't think twice about making his subjects fight each other to the death for his twisted amusement, just before Aizen showed up to kick him off his throne, he was considering dividing his army in half and having the two sides fight to the death just to pass time.
  • When Aizen offers him even greater power and a new world in return for his obedience, instead of polity accepting his offer, he arrogantly laughs, saying that there was no new world and no one higher than him.

Bleach[]

  • When Aaroniero Arruruerie was killed in his battle with Rukia Kuchiki, Baraggan coldly notes that it was shameful for an Espada like Aaroniero to die in such a manner, not showing any sympathy to him.
  • Throughout his battle with Soi Fon and Hachi arrogantly raving about how his power is absolute. Most of the fight he relies exclusively on his Respira, believing it to be more than enough to kill them.
    • He spends most of the fight just toying with them, instead of taking them seriously.
      • If he had bothered to fight Suì-Fēng, Ōmaeda and Hachi seriously from the very start, he probably could've killed them with moderate effort. Instead he underestimated them and contented himself with relying on his Respira to do the job for him.
  • After Sui-Feng panickledly has Omaeda cut off her left arm to save herself from Respira, he muses that Shinigami seem to fear death as much as anyone else. He later ridicules Hachi for thinking Kido was eternal and wouldn't age, insisting that "eternity" was simply a concept made up by those afraid of death. During his Villainous Breakdown, he rants about how he's an undying god, only to get killed by his own power. Hachi laments that he was ultimately just as afraid of death as anyone else, showing us how much of a hypocrite he is.
  • His very gruesome death is played for complete and utter stress relief.
  • Despite his cool appearance and having a bit of evil is cool moments, his arrogance and obnoxiousness completely water down any enjoyable qualities about him.

Trivia[]

  • As an old man who holds authority over nearly all of his realm and wields a Zanpakuto that can cause absolute destruction, Baraggan is the foil to Yamamoto Genryusai. A difference being that Baraggan sees his subordinates as little more than pawns while deep down Yamamoto does have some emotional attachment to his men.
