Beadle Bamford is the secondary antagonist of the 1979 musical Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street as well as its 2007 film adaptation of the same name.
He was played by the late Jack Eric Williams in the musicals and by Timothy Spall in the film, who also portrayed Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter franchise.
What Makes Him Despicable[]
- He helped Turpin incriminate Benjamin Barker to take him away from his family, resulting in the latter going to jail and being enslaved to prison labor for years.
- He lured Benjamin's wife, Lucy, to Turpin's party afterwards so that Turpin would be able to rape her there, sadistically grinning as he watches it happen while all the other guests laughed.
- In the play, he killed Anthony's pet bird to give him a reminder as to what would happen to him should he ever try to encounter Johanna again, while in the film, he beat him with a stick and gave him the same threat.
- After Turpin sentenced a young boy to be hanged for crimes that weren't proved to be committed by him, when he asked Bamford if he thinks he really did it, Bamford merely told him that he had to have done something to deserve it, showing that he doesn't care if the corrupt judge could have potentially sentenced an innocent child to death.
- He fully supported Turpin's plans to marry Johanna in spite of how much younger the latter is than him and that he is her adoptive daughter too.
- When Johanna was caught trying to escape the house to avoid marrying Turpin, on the orders of Turpin, Bamford sent her away to Jonas Fogg's mental asylum where Turpin intended to keep her until she agreed to marry him.
- Although most of his actions are done under the orders of Turpin, Beadle still takes great enjoyment in them, with there being no evidence his loyalty to the latter is for anything other than the sadistic joy he gets out of it.
- With the exceptions of his daughter Annie and possibly Turpin, (in the play at least), Beadle has no care for anyone but himself.
