William "Billy" Nolan is a major antagonist in the 1974 horror novel Carrie and its film adaptations. He is Chris Hargensen's boyfriend, and is a teen delinquent who helps mastermind her plan to humiliate Carrie White.

He was portrayed by John Travolta in the 1976 film, who also played Vic Deakins in Broken Arrow, Howard Saint in The Punisher, Ryder in The Taking of Pelham 123, Gabriel Shear in Swordfish, Emil Kovač in Killing Season, Terl in Battlefield Earth, Castor Troy in Face/Off and Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction. He was portrayed by Jesse Cadotte in the 2002 film, and Alex Russell in the 2013 film.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • He's the leader of a gang and has a long record of delinquent behavior, noting that he once dropped a pumpkin from an overpass onto a highway, which may have injured or even killed people.
  • He enjoys running over stray dogs with his car for fun.
  • He's controlling and abusive to his delinquent friends, who seem terrified of him.
  • He's physically abusive to Chris, and in one scene in the book, he rapes her. Though Chris gives in when she realizes that she likes it, it doesn't make it any less despicable.
  • He's implied to have homicidal tendencies, as he threatens to murder both Chris and his stepfather.
  • He becomes obsessed with destroying Carrie's prom night and takes over the plan to humiliate her, which ends up killing Tommy Ross. He even says that he wants to ruin the prom for everyone and doesn't care who the victims are, just as long as he gets to torment and humiliate someone.
  • He takes sadistic glee in killing and butchering two pigs for the prank.
  • When he rigs the buckets of pig blood over the stage, he deliberately leaves his friends' fingerprints on the buckets in the hope that they'll be arrested.
  • He shows no remorse when he learns that the town is burning, and lies to Chris that he'll take her with him when they flee town, but then decides that he's going to abandon her.
  • He tries to run over Carrie even when Chris is against it, and clearly enjoys it as he thinks to himself that he wishes it was his stepfather going under his tires.

Trivia[]

  • He's less of a hate sink in the 1976 film, as he's mostly a dimwitted follower and John Travolta's performance helps make him funny.
  • He's worse in the 2002 TV film, as he corces Chris into continuing with the prank after she starts having second thoughts upon seeing how happy Carrie is, calling her a chicken, and Chris tries to stop him when he attempts to run over and kill Carrie White. It can be argued that he is the Greater-Scope Villain in this version.
