Walder Rivers, better known as Black Walder is a major antagonist in Game of Thrones. He is a bastard son of Lord Walder Frey who helps him in his plans.

What makes him Hated?[]

  • Beside Lothar Frey he come to a meeting with Robb Stark to convince him to marry his uncle, Edmure Tully to one of their sisters, Roslyn Frey. The purpose of the arrival is to reassure Rob of suspicion that Walder is organizing a coup against him.
  • Helps orchestrate the Red Wedding that dishonored their hospitality and cost the lives of many people.
  • He slits Catelyn Stark's throat slowly.
  • After Walder becomes Lord of Riverrun and Brandon Tully manages to take over he takes the Frey army to overthrow him. When he and his brother are unsuccessful they seek help from House Lannister, which is not directly involved in this conflict.
    • Although the battle was ultimately averted it cost Bryndon Tully his life and almost ended in the death of Edmure's son, had he not cooperated with them.
  • He shares in the threat on Edmure's life, although they stopped it when they realized it wouldn't stop Bryndon Tully.
  • He was even more sadistic than his brother and started fighting Jamie for using Edom to prevent the siege, causing Jamie to punch him in the nose.

Trivia[]

  • He is an amalgamation between two separate characters from the A Song of Ice and Fire novels: Ser Walder Rivers, one of Lord Walder's eldest bastard sons, and "Black" Walder Frey, a son of Ser Ryman Frey and grandson of Lord Walder.
    • However, unlike Black Walder Rivers, neither Ser Walder Rivers nor Black Walder Frey are ever portrayed as incompetent. In fact they are accomplished military commanders and warriors and legit feared threats. Neither of them are ever slapped by Jaime, who slaps Ser Ryman in the novels, instead.
