Bob Ewell, real name Robert E. Lee Ewell, is the main antagonist of Harper Lee's 1960 novel, To Kill a Mockingbird in addition to the 1962 film adaptation of the same name. A virulent racist, Ewell frames Tom Robinson for raping his daughter, Mayella.
In the film adaption, Bob Ewell was portrayed by the late James Anderson.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink[]
- He neglects and abuses his eight children, to the point that his poaching is the only thing preventing them from starving to death.
- He manipulates the prejudiced court system in Maycomb county by falsely accusing Tom Robinson, an innocent black man, of rape, and getting him sentenced to death.
- He severely beat Mayella for making advances on Tom, and is implied to have raped her himself.
- He proves his dimwittedness by failing to cover up the blatant lies in his testimony.
- He threatens to kill Atticus for exposing him as a liar and falsely accuses Atticus of getting him fired from his job, when he was fired for laziness.
- He gloats when Tom is killed trying to escape prison, saying it's "one down and about two more to go."
- He attempted to rob Judge Taylor's, but ran off when he realized he was home, further showing his cowardice.
- He stalks and sexually harasses Tom's widow on her way to work.
- Out of pure vengeance for being humiliated by Atticus Finch in court, Ewell proves how much of a coward he is by attempting to murder Atticus's two children, even after the court gave Ewell the decision he wanted by declaring Tom Robinson guilty and sentencing him to death.
- Though he's an alcoholic, it's never used to excuse his actions.
- He prioritizes committing evil over self-preservation.
