Bogs Diamond is a major antagonist in the 1994 film adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption. Despite departing from the story early on unlike the main antagonist and the two main protagonists regretting their past, Bogs stands out as one of the most vile characters of the film due to his crimes and predatory nature, essentially serving as a realistic example of real life prison rapists.
He was portrayed by Mark Rolston, who also played Captain Del Rio in Halo 4.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Is extremely hostile and unpleasant right off the bat.
- Rapes and abuses several inmates at Shawshank, including Andy. What makes this even worse is that this was out of pure sadism rather than sexual gratification.
- He cowardly had his goons do most of the beating for him.
- Harassed and raped Andy Dufresne for two years.
- Most likely doesn't care about the Sisters. At the very least, they decided to leave Andy alone after Hadley beats him up.
- Beat Andy to a pulp for preying on his ignorance, sending him to the infirmary for a month. He then spends a week in the hole.
- He got his comeuppance by Byron Hadley's hand by getting beaten up so badly that he was unable to walk or talk again. Though his beating was extremely brutal, he completely deserved it for everything that he did. The fact many fans cheered on Hadley for this despite being a Hate Sink himself speaks volume.
- He's one of Stephen King's most realistic villains, as he's representation of prison rapists and how inmates like him are the main reason behind the hellish nature of prison, and people like Bogs can exist in the real world. It also help that he's a human compared to many Stephen King villains being paranormal or cosmic beings.
