Brian Irons is a major antagonist in both versions of Resident Evil 2 as well as a minor antagonist in Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and the overarching antagonist of Jill's in Resident Evil 3 Remake. He was Raccoon City's last Chief of Police in 1998, although he secretly accepted bribes from the Umbrella Corporation to cover up their unethical experiments in the area. It's also revealed that he committed various other horrible crimes throughout his career, including (but not limited to) rape and murder.
He was voiced by the late Gary Krawford in the original Resident Evil 2, by JB Blanc in The Darkside Chronicles, and by Sid Carton and Akio Hirose in the RE2 remake in English and Japanese respectively.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He was charged with raping two female students back in his university years, but the charges were dropped due to his good grades and money. Unfortunately, this would have severe consequences down the line.
- His crimes are very ironic, since he runs a shelter for abused women in the remake.
- He sadistically hunts animals for sport and then stuffs them into taxidermy (which according to the mahnwa, actually dates back to his childhood). He even does the same thing to human women such as the mayor's daughter, Katherine Warren (plus a file in Outbreak insinuates that he killed eight other females who looked just like her). Not to mention his dungeon underneath the police station...
- In the remake, his taxidermy log states that he nearly orgasmed while gutting a dead tiger, and it's implied that the 22-year-old "pig" he's referring to is the mayor's daughter since a pig's lifespan is no more than 20 years in real life.
- He's by all means responsible for Raccoon City being destroyed, since he was keeping Umbrella's secrets (if he hadn’t, there may not have eventually been a containment breach) and then relished going on a killing spree while hiding the RPD's ammo and weaponry all over town. This left the town defenseless from the zombies. He questions how Umbrella could destroy Raccoon City after everything he did for them, but he played a large role in the city's destruction as well, partly because he didn't allow Umbrella to come under police investigation.
- In the remake, it's revealed that he was the director of an orphanage, where William and Annette Birkin experimented on countless children. Eventually, Irons himself then ordered the entire place massacred after one of the kids tried to escape.
- Also in the remake, he kidnaps Sherry and threatens to kill her if Claire doesn't deliver her pendant, and tries to hurt her after she escapes and throws acid in his face. There's also a fair amount of Fridge Horror involved, considering:
- He outright states that he would've simply let her go if she didn't drop her locket in the garage. However, according to a file in the original game, he purposely let the mayor's daughter escape just so he could enjoy hunting her down later. And judging from how she turned out...
- If Sherry gets caught during the cat-and-mouse sequence in the orphanage, the game over screen says "you're trapped" instead of "you're dead".
- Irons already has a history of victimizing blonde girls, though they weren't necessarily Sherry's age.
- He lacks any redeeming qualities, and everything about him is played for horror.
- While one could argue that the Raccoon City outbreak drove him insane, he was already a horrible person before then and all it really did was make him worse.
Trivia[]
- Originally, Brian Irons was not a villain but rather a hero who assisted Claire Redfield during the Racoon City Outbreak. Had this been the case, Brian wouldn't have qualified as a Hate Sink much less Pure Evil.
