Bruno Manheim is a recurring antagonist from Superman the Animated Series. He is a crime boss who is the leader of Intergang, a large crime syndicate in Metropolis.
He is voiced by Bruce Weitz.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is a crime boss who runs most of Metropolis's criminal activity.
- He offered to finance a toy factory for Winslow Schott Sr. in exchange for him allowing Mannheim to use the factory as a front for a numbers racket. When the racket was discovered, Mannheim denied all responsibility and scapegoated Schott as the sole party responsible so he could avoid any legal ramifications, getting Schott sent to prison for a much longer time than he deserved as a mere accomplice to the scheme, all so Mannheim could escape any and all punishment for his illegal gambling practices.
- This led to Schott Sr. being imprisoned for the rest of his life and his son, Schott Jr., being left without a father and shuffled through various foster homes, ruining the boy's life.
- Mannheim makes it clear he feels no remorse for any of this. When Schott Jr. resurfaced years later as the Toyman to take revenge on Mannheim, Mannheim offered no apologies, stating that Schott Jr. was "a loser, a freakshow just like his father".
- He never shows any gratitude toward Superman for saving him from the Toyman. As a matter of fact, he tries to kill Superman in later episodes.
- He allies himself with Darkseid while knowing that Darkseid intends to enslave or destroy Earth, selling out humanity to try and save his own skin.
- After being sent back to Earth, Mannheim can't think of anything better to do with the new weapons Darkseid gifted him than to have his men perform more crimes. Darkseid calls him out on using the powerful weapons he gave him for such trivial things as robbery.
- He is implied to murder several people with Darkseid's "Bug" soldiers to take over a nuclear testing facility. He than overloads the reactor to make it explode and have it melt into Earth's core to turn it into a second Apokolips.
- He is rather foolish, being manipulated by Darkseid, who leaves him to die in the nuclear blast once Mannheim outlives his usefulness. Darkseid even mocks him by calling him a "king of fools".
- He is stupid enough to think he could outrun the nuclear explosion in a motorboat. Needless to say, it doesn't work.
- He was foolish enough that he didn't suspect the giant bubbles the Toyman was blowing toward him were dangerous despite all his previous crimes at that point having involved "trick" toys. He stood there talking until the bubbles, filled with knockout gas, reached him and popped instead of shooting Toyman when he had the chance.
- His episodes are largely devoted to his humiliation, which is meant to be seen as deserved for his crimes.
- Overall, he is a greedy, traitorous, remorseless, ungrateful, foolish crime boss whose misfortunes are meant to be very cathartic.
