The Burglar is the starter villain of the long running Spider-Man franchise. He is a common criminal who, despite his short focus, is ultimately responsible for Peter Parker becoming the superhero Spider-Man.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- It's revealed in his brief returning role that he had been a thief even in his younger years and had been in and out of prison, indicating he was always a rotten egg.
- Unlike his future counterpart from the Sam Raimi films, he showed no gratitude for Spider-Man refusing to stop him for the police and allowing him to escape, referring to him as a "goon in a costume".
- He broke into the Parker home and tried to rob Aunt May and Uncle Ben and obtain the treasure hidden in their home many years ago. Despite the couple being elderly, he had no qualms with threatening them, and he remorselessly shot and killed Ben when he tried to protect his wife.
- In his brief returning role in the comics years later, he once again menaced Aunt May, this time teaming up with Mysterio. He made it clear he was perfectly willing to kill her and her nephew Peter to get the treasure. He indicated he felt absolutely no remorse for what he did to Ben. He also planned on betraying and killing Mysterio so he could keep all the treasure to himself, showing he had no loyalty or honor.
- He revealed that he held a grudge against Spider-Man for rightfully having him sent to prison and had fantasized about killing him for years, wanting him to suffer before he died.
- He made Peter believe that he killed May and threatened to kill him too if he didn't give him information.
- He threatened May by saying he would kill her and Peter if she didn't tell him what he needed to know.
- Even after learning that Spider-Man and Peter Parker were one and the same and having a fear induced heart attack that soon killed him, he still felt no remorse, lamenting that he should have killed the entire Parker family when he had the chance.
- While it was later revealed he had a daughter (Jessica Carradine), whom he apparently did love, once she learned the truth about him, even she abandoned all respect for him.
Trivia[]
- His first name was never revealed in the comics. His daughter Jessica had the last name of Carradine. The Raimi films name him Dennis Carradine. This name was also used in the video game adaptation of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
