He was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- While he seems to be cultured, it's actually a facade. He claims to love French culture but doesn't speak French, and is unaware that Alexandre Dumas, his favorite author, was black.
- He takes great joy in abusing his slaves.
- He enjoys watching a brutal Mandingo fight, and when his slave wins, he orders him to murder his opponent by smashing his skull in.
- He orders an escaped slave to be torn apart by dogs, doing this partly to torment Django and Dr. Schultz by forcing them to watch.
- When he discovers Django's plan, he gloats about his racist views, displaying the skull of a dead slave and sawing it open, claiming that phrenology (a discredited psuedoscience) proves that black people are inferior. He then has his men burst in and hold Django and Schultz at gunpoint, forcing them to pay him $12,000 in exchange for Broomhilda, threatening to beat Broomhilda to death with a hammer if they refuse.
- He tries to force Schultz to humiliate himself even further by ordering him to shake his hand and acknowledge him as an equal before letting him leave, which pushes Schultz over the edge and causes him to shoot Candie dead.
Trivia[]
- Quentin Tarantino stated that Candie is the only villain he's written who he actually hated. It tells something considering that he made such villains as Zed & Maynard or Buck, who are rapists and Pure Evils.
- Leonardo DiCaprio admitted that he felt uncomfortable playing Candie and apologized to his fellow cast members in between takes for the horrible things the character was saying especially the racial profanity.
