You know, I'd think you, of all people, would appreciate the benefit of living to fight another day.
~ Del Rio to Master Chief
I am ordering you.... TO SURRENDER THAT AI!!!!!!!!!!
~ Del Rio's most infamous quote.

Andrew Del Rio is a major character of the Halo series. He is a former captain of the UNSC Infinity, the most powerful warship ever built by humanity. Del Rio is known as being a competent by-the-book captain, but not being very good at inspiring loyalty among his crew. In the events of Halo 4, Del Rio commands the forces of the Infinity after it crash lands on the Forerunner shield world of Requiem and finds Master Chief. He asked Master Chief for a favor in escaping Requiem in the extreme urgent. He was stripped down his rank as a captain and was promoted to UEG senator near the end of Halo 4.

He is voiced and played by Mark Rolston.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • While he is competent by the book, he lacks experience in decision making, as a captain his every decision just makes the situation worse for the Infinity.
  • He decided to go to Requiem to try and rescue the Master Chief and for his troubles caused his ship is sucked into the planet's gravity well, risking every one of his crews' lives.
  • He is very impatient towards his crew. Does not care whether how many casualties were lost in the crash in Requiem.
  • He prioritized in escaping Requiem over treating the wounded marines.
  • He does not show any gratefulness or respect for Master Chief and Cortana's help.
  • Refused to listen to Master Chief and Cortana's warning about The Didact's threat to humanity, as he considered them to be hallucinating and calling them an aging Spartan and malfunctioning AI respectively.
  • Ordered Commander Lasky to dismantle Cortana due to her rampancy.
  • When Master Chief took Cortana's chip, he angrily demanded Chief to surrender the AI. When Chief refused to, he tried to order Lieutenant Palmer to arrest him.
  • He refused to help Master Chief in stopping The Didact, prioritizing his own safety over all of humanity.
  • After being demoted, he made political hate speech that Spartan-IIs (including Master Chief) are pieces of obsolete and Spartan-IVs are direct upgrade.
  • He was forced to stop his hate comments against Spartan-IIs after Chief's mission against the Didact was successful. It's also implied he was forced to take a vacation and keep a low profile afterwards. All of this serves as karma to him for his cowardice and stupidity.
  • Unlike other Halo characters (with the exception of Prophet of Truth), Del Rio does not have any redeeming or sympathetic qualities nor any Evil is Cool moments.
