Captain Frederick Gideon is one of two main overarching antagonists (along with Gabe) in the TV series Locke and Key, serving as the unseen overarching antagonist of its first season, the overarching antagonist of its second season and the main antagonist in the third and final season.
He was portrayed by Kevin Durand.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He has no regard for any life except his own. There is no indication that he cares for Samuel Coffey and James Bolton; him not abusing them could just be out of pragmatism. Furthermore, he tells Sam Lesser (presuming he is Bolton) that he is "worse than a broken clock" and he doesn't even react to Coffey's annihilation at all. He doesn't even care about the other demons since he murders Eden for no reason and keeps bullying Dodge every chance he gets until she disappears through the Timeshift Key's hourglass feature. Thankfully, Dodge doesn't take it lying down, but everyone else does except for the Lockes themselves.
- He believes that the meaning of life is to make people suffer.
- When Eden resurrects him, he shows his unparalleled gratitude by murdering her for no reason.
- He seeks to collect all of the Lockes' magical keys together, calling them "an expression of human vanity", and use them to open the portal of doom, which is set to destroy everything.
- The scene where Kinsey Locke gives him a surprise by pulling the Alpha Key out of nowhere is played for complete satisfaction, stress relief, and wish fulfillment.
- No matter how vile other villains in the show got, Sam Lesser is redeemable, Gabe does bog-standard villainy and has several redeeming qualities, and Eden Hawkins is a compelling, intriguing, and flat-out wholesome character who is even less heinous than Gabe is, and she didn't know she was summoning a demon from the Wellhouse, just like Ellie Whedon. So Frederick is far more loathsome than the others.
- Even Dodge (a morally grey demonic entity who doesn't even hate Eden after pushing her away for being toxic or the Lockes for trying to kill her several times), detests Frederick for his sadism and selfishness.
- Overall, an extremely vile creature and obviously irredeemable psychopath who is extremely petulant, hypocritical, and sadistic.
Trivia[]
- Cementing his status as a Hate Sink, his actor Kevin Durand has called Frederick Gideon out for his hubris and his impatience, stating that he has a god-complex. Fellow actors Connor Jessup and Darby Stanchfield have also elaborated on the fact that he is a piece of work and makes Dodge look like a harmless rainbow cupcake by comparison.
