Carl Buford is a major antagonist of the crime-drama TV series Criminal Minds, serving as the main antagonist of the Season 2 episode "Profiler Profiled" and the overarching antagonist of the Season 8 episode "Restoration". He was the owner of the Upward Youth Center, who used his position to molest teenage boys including his archnemesis Derek Morgan.
He was portrayed by Julius Tennon.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is a textbook pedophile who used his status as the owner of a youth club to sexually abuse 55 young boys, traumatizing all of them and preventing them from speaking to anyone about their experiences. In fact, one of the victims (Rodney Harris) became a serial killer who murdered several men who he thought were pedophiles like Carl, and when Derek Morgan confronted him about his rapes, he tries to blame him for his trauma by telling Derek he could have said no the first time while he was being molested.
- While he teaches Derek how to play football, this is part of his plan to get him to trust him.
- While he promises that one of his victims will get into college if he complies with him, this is a form of manipulation and not out of altruism.
- When he found out that three boys were going to expose him for who he is, he strangled all of them to death, showing he has a cowardly side.
- Despite saying he loved Derek in prison, it is outright perversion on his behalf.
- Him converting to Islam while being in jail is not a genuine attempt at redemption, but rather a method he used to avoid being killed by his fellow inmates in prison, which failed big time and only resulted in his death.
- Overall, he is an absolutely horrid man with no redeeming qualities or "Evil is Cool" factors whatsoever. His death is played for pure karmic satisfaction as even the other prisoners were disgusted by his crimes.
