~ Jay Landsman's description of Charles Marimow |
Charles Marimow is a minor antagonist in HBO's The Wire. He is a shift lieutenant in the Baltimore Police Department who is briefly put in charge of the Major Crimes Unit (MCU).
He is portrayed by Boris McGiver.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is generally a massive jerk with a pattern of alienating the detectives he supervises that he is known as the "unit killer." He's so infamous for his hostile command style that Rawls puts him in charge of the MCU in an attempt to drive away some of its detectives.
- As Rawls intended, his hostility results in two of the MCU's best detectives, Lester Freamon and Kima Greggs, leaving the MCU.
- His overconfidence hinders the MCU's effectiveness, as the first series of raids on Marlo Stanfield fail miserably because Marimow underestimated Marlo's intelligence.
- While Rawls and Valchek are both petty and malicious (Valchek in particular having caused much more damage than Marimow), they both have a degree of charm and Rawls has a humanizing moment in the wake of Kima's shooting. By contrast, there is nothing charming or humanizing about Marimow.
Trivia[]
- Cementing his status as a Hate Sink, the name "Marimow" is taken from a real editor at the Baltimore Sun who David Simon strongly disliked and is also the inspiration for Thomas Klebanow, another Hate Sink.
