Charlotte Scherzen is the secondary antagonist of the 2015 anime, Valkyrie Drive Mermaid.
She is a member of Welter and works under the Governor, where she apparently holds a high position despite it never being revealed what exactly it is. She is in charge of training and integrating the girls that are sent to Mermaid Island, and is liberator. She stands out from her colleagues such as Akira due to her cold and calculating nature and the sadistic joy she gains from inflicting pain onto her sycophants, particularly those that are masochistic.
She is voiced by Asami Seto in Japanese, and by Monica Rial in English.
What Makes Her A Hate Sink?[]
- She's a massive egotist, seeing herself as the most beautiful person on the island and insisting that everyone else gives her the admiration she believes that she deserves for it.
- She is sexually, psychologically, and physically abusive towards her followers in Adel. A large number of the scenes where she's onscreen show her hitting, yelling at, or forcing the girls to take part sexual acts with her for her amusement or otherwise benefit in some way in her sadomasochistic activities with the girls in her "harem". The former of which is especially depraved given how Charlotte's actions are with her extars are consistently framed as an abuse of power rather than the consensual relationships that are seen with most other examples of extars and liberators in the series and treats the girls who can turn into weapons for her to wield as tools to fuel her ego and assert her dominance while fulfilling sadistic hedonism.
- She shows zero regard for the life or well-being of any of the girls on the island. As shown when she callously orders for Nimi Minimi and Noe Oya to be separated when they're powers fail to act up immediately, threatens to attack Nimi later on even though the latter meant no harm and simply wanted to see Noe who was still incarcerated, and lunged at Kasumi when she intervened to stop her and protect Nimi.
- She is manipulative and self-centered, prioritizing her own agenda of gaining power over the mission of the organization that she works for, Wärter.
- She's a control freak who rules over Mermaid with an iron fist and subjects anyone who doesn't comply by the rules of Mermaid humiliating punishments to traumatize them and scare any bystanders into abstaining from trying to stand up to her. This has also applied in cases where the victim wasn't even aware that she did something wrong. It's been all but stated that everyone on Mermaid is terrified of her and those who aren't simply haven't faced her wrath or haven't delt with it enough.
- Aside from being slapped by Momoka, she never faces any real punishment for her actions and the final scene she's in sees her and her harem being happily sent back home.
