Chick "Thunder" Hicks is a a major antagonist in the Cars franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the first film and several other installments, and a minor antagonist in the third film. He is a former Piston Cup racer who always finished in the second place despite cheating, and Lightning McQueen's main rival. He eventually won his first and only Piston Cup before being (rightfully) forced to retire due to being booed at to host his own talk show on Racing Sports Network.
He is voiced by Michael Keaton in the first film and a few of its video games, whereas he’s voiced by Bob Peterson in the third film.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is even more selfish and egotisical than Lightning McQueen was at the start of the series, as he lacks any sort of respect for other racers, while Lightning respected The King to a degree. Car Finder even claims that Chick's "number 1 fan" is Chick himself.
- He often plays dirty, performing PIT maneuvers on rival racecars to get them out of the way. One such maneuver has him cause a pileup of crashed cars just to slow Lightning McQueen down.
- He often acts obnoxiously, bragging about himself and putting others down.
- During the tie-breaker race, he hits The King, causing him to spin out of control and crash in a brutal way. Chick Hicks feels no remorse for this as he selfishly crosses the finish line and doing donuts to celebrate his victory, and even acts surprised when the angry mob of fans and the press refuse to celebrate his victory and boo him instead.
- His defeat at the end of the first film, where he gets booed at by everyone for his bad attitude before they start throwing stuff in his face which causes him to run off the stage, was completely well-deserved for his cheating ways and poor sportsmanship.
- Upon retiring, Chick Hicks uses his TV show Chick's Picks with Chick Hicks to bully McQueen and bring up his own victory just to rub it in his face when next-gen racers take over the motorsports.
Trivia[]
- Chick Hicks is the first Cars hate sink.
- His Boom!Studios Comics counterpart isn't a hate sink, as he has a legitimate freudian excuse for his behaviour, has committed a few selfless acts, and is overall presented as more comedic than detestable.
- Chick can be considered as a dark parallel to Lightning McQueen (who is a Love Exalted himself). Both are Piston Cup racers who dream of fame and winning, but whereas McQueen learned that helping others is important than fame and fortune when he gave up the Piston Cup to help Strip Weathers finish his last race, even if it meant allowing his rival to win through dirty means, and thus chose to stay with Rust-Eze, Chick only suffered worse and didn’t feel remorse when the angry mob of fans booed him off the stage. Thus, Chick serves as an example of what McQueen had become if he didn’t end up in Radiator Springs and learned valuable life lessons from their residents, and didn’t teach or remind viewers that you don’t often win competitions and there are more important things in life than winning. Chick can also be a dark parallel to Doc Hudson, who at first, didn’t approve of McQueen and sentenced him to fix the road, but eventually got along with him and became his teacher. Doc also serves as an example if he hadn’t put his past behind him and continued to be arrogant towards McQueen; something that Chick does in the third movie by mocking Lightning McQueen for his losses to Jackson Storm and boasting his beloved trophy, proving that Doc Hudson was right that it's just an empty cup.
- Having won a major competition only to be booed off by the media and fans, a similar comeuppance would also happen in Underdogs, where Ace Remacho would successfully win the soccer match against Jake and his team and claim the town, only for the fans to instead applaud Jake for his heroism and sportsmanship and rejecting Ace for his bad sportsmanship, which resulted also his own teammates turning against him including his Manager, who gives him advice that idols fall due to their egocentrism while announcing his retirement.
