Chilled is the ancestor of Frieza, and the main antagonist of Episode of Bardock, as well as a minor antagonist in the Supreme Kai of Time Saga of Super Dragon Ball Heroes. He was voiced by Ryūsei Nakao in Japanese and Richard Steve Horvitz in English.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is involved in the business run by Frieza's family line of enslaving races of different planets, eliminating all life from planets so he can sell them to others, and destroying planets he has no interest in either ruling or selling.
- He sends two soldiers to attack and conquer planet Plant.
- In the manga, he murders one of his henchmen just for accidentally standing in his way. He also makes a surprisingly stupid mistake for an emperor by forgetting to clean the blood from his hand, which is how Berry catches on that he and his men are lying about being part of the Galactic Patrol.
- He blows up houses in the village and threatens to have his soldiers kill Ipana if he doesn't hand over the special medicine he invented.
- He nearly kills Berry (a child) when he tries to protect Bardock.
- He tries to destroy planet Plant just to kill Bardock.
- He is responsible for Frieza learning of the legend of the Super Saiyan, which would lead to him deciding to commit genocide on the Saiyan race, which kickstarts the franchise's events.
- He is a generic reskin of Frieza who, unlike Cooler, lacks any defining traits or characterization to make him stand out on his own and lacks any of the "cool" factors that Frieza or Cooler have.
- Overall, he is an equally monstrous member of Frieza and Cooler's family with none of the charisma or other entertaining qualities that either of them have. In comparison to them, he is much more short tempered and comes off as little more than a petty, sadistic bully, similar to Dodoria. The manga in particular also shows him to be more stupid than either of them due to his previously mentioned forgetting to clean his bloody arm. He is also much weaker, as the power Bardock had prior to becoming a Super Saiyan was substantially less than that of Goku prior to his own initial transformation.
- His defeat is played for satisfaction, as it allows Bardock to avenge his own loss against Frieza.
- While he does show concern for his family at the end, it is downplayed by the fact that they, like him, are presumably mass murdering space pirates who have been involved in genocide and enslavement.
- In the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime and manga, Chilled is revealed to be the one who wiped out Vidro's race, the Glass Tribe, leaving her the last of her kind in her timeline. As a result, when Yamcha and Vidro fight and defeat him together, it is meant to be an awesome moment for them, especially Yamcha.
Trivia[]
- While Chilled was meant to be disliked for being a horrible, evil tyrant, and the author of the manga did avoid giving him any of the more heavy characterization that Frieza and Cooler had due to time constraints and because he was meant to be hated, at the same time, this caused a lot of fans to hate him for being a generic and boring clone of Frieza without anything to stand out on his own. As a result, he is more hated for being a boring rehash than for his heinous actions. His Super Dragon Ball Heroes counterpart, however, reverses this, being more hated for his heinous action of wiping out planet Glass, the world of Vidro, Yamcha's new girlfriend, who quickly became a fan favorite character.
