Chuck Cranston is one of the main antagonists of the film Footloose. He is the abusive and jerk boyfriend of Ariel who antagonizes the protagonist Ren.
He is portrayed by Jim Youngs in 1984 film and Patrick Flueger in 2011 remake.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Unlike Shaw Moore, who is an anti-villain and a well-intentioned extremist who bans dancing and rock music because of the death of his son and Ariel's brother, Chuck is just a scoundrel and a cowardly bully.
- He doesn't show that he genuinely loves Ariel, he just manipulates her feelings.
- He challenges Ren to a game of chicken involving tractors for petty reasons (car battle in the 2011 remake) and loses.
- It is implied that he is spreading rumors about Ren to tarnish his reputation, it is likely that he and his friends are the ones who threw a stone at the window of Ren's house, where it could have hurt one of Ren's sisters.
- When he confronts Ariel for showing interest in Ren, he insults her which causes her to punch him in the face and he hits her back which gives her a black eye.
- He's a complete coward who never confronts Ren personally and relies on his "henchmen" to try to harass him. At the end of the film, he and his group attack Willard, who only wanted to go to the party. He proves to be pathetically weak, as he and his friends are easily defeated by Ren and Willard.
- He has no redeeming qualities or funny moments.
