It's too bad you couldn't help your little friend. That little girl. What was her name again? Rue? Well, we killed her, and now, we're going to kill you.
~ Clove to Katniss Everdeen, and her most infamous quote.
I'm the best. I could kill you from clear across the stage.
~ Clove to Caesar Flickerman (in a deleted scene).

Clove is a minor antagonist in The Hunger Games. She is one of four Career Tributes in the 74th Hunger Games, although she manages to be far more deplorable than the other three.

She was portrayed by Isabelle Fuhrman.

What makes her a Hate Sink?[]

  • While Caesar Flickerman says she's a volunteer, there's absolutely no indication she did it out of altruism like Katniss Everdeen did; she obviously did it out of pure sadism which makes her malevolent since she was excited to kill other children with knives from the get-go.
  • She arrogantly claims to Caesar Flickerman that she's "the best" during her interview (deleted scene).
  • She never stops showing off during training, and she even laughs at a boy almost getting injured. Katniss even says she looks at Peeta "like a meal" and only backs off when he throws a very heavy metal object across the room.
  • She hates Katniss Everdeen just because she has a cool dress and a high training score, which is petty.
  • She remorselessly throws a knife at a teenage boy during the infamous cornucopia brawl, and tries to throw a second one at Katniss. She also murders another girl and pushes a second, so Marvel can do it.
  • She ambushes a girl building a fire and either murders her or grins maniacally as one of the other three do it (although in her defense, the Careers' victim was being extremely stupid).
  • She yells at Cato to finish climbing a tree, so he can stab Katniss to death, which thankfully doesn't happen.
  • In a "Kick the Dog" moment, she sees a lizard innocently minding its own business and throws a knife at it purely out of boredom.
  • She implies she played a part in the death of Rue, a beloved character.
  • She goes to the cornucopia without Cato and ambushes Katniss, beating her senseless and holding her at knife-point, proceeding to cruelly mock and torment her over Rue's death. She also calls Peeta "lover boy" to condescend to him, relishing the idea of him being beyond help.
  • When Thresh retaliates and accuses her of killing Rue, she claims she didn't, despite bragging about it less than ten seconds ago. When he calls her on this aforementioned bullcrap, she pathetically calls for help, which disgusts Thresh enough to rightfully take her life, avenging Rue in the process.
  • While she does have a Freudian excuse in that she and the other Career Tributes were molded into hardened warriors from birth, her vicious and ruthless nature stands out even compared to other Career Tributes:
    • Unlike Marvel, she is a sadist who prefers to kill teenage girls as slowly as possible.
    • Unlike Glimmer, who cares for Cato in an almost intimate way and never did anything particularly revolting at any given time in the movie, she doesn't care about Cato and is a complete psychopath who does something cruel every chance she gets.
    • Unlike Cato, who has an "Evil is Cool" vibe, a moment of remorseful reflection, and a sympathetic death when mutts gnaw on his hide and Katniss puts him out of his misery with her bow and arrow, Clove has no redeeming qualities of any kind, Thresh cuts her down to size as a pathetic coward (which is the polar opposite of coolness), and her death is played for complete satisfaction as Thresh beautifully gives her what she deserves.
    • Unlike Brutus and Enobaria, who mostly come across as generic brutes, she has a personality, even if it's a two-dimensional one.
  • Like Romulus Thread and President Alma Coin, she has absolutely no redeeming features of any kind. And while she isn't as cruel as them, it's not like she has the resources.

Trivia[]

  • She is one of four Hate Sinks from the quadrilogy, along with Marvel, Romulus Thread, and President Alma Coin.
