Colonel William Stuart is the main antagonist of the second installment in the Die Hard series, Die Hard 2. A former colonel in the US military, Stuart goes rogues and becomes the leader of a terrorist cell whose goals are to free the notorious drug lord, General Ramon Esperanza, from custody and then make money after escaping from the US.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- During a snowstorm, Stuart sabotages the electricity at Dulles International Airport. This endangered several planes that were running low on fuel and couldn't land because the communications system was unusable.
- Despite not caring about his men being killed, he threatens another of his men by putting a gun to his head and threatening to kill him if he fails again.
- Murders an old man and has his team set up their headquarters in his church.
- In retaliation for John McClane killing his men, the same men who previous slaughtered an airport security team, Stuart crashes the Windsor 114 into the airport killing 230 innocent people.
- Wants to free General Ramon Esperanza, a notorious drug lord and dictator, because he fully agrees with Esperanza... all while making a fortune in the process.
- When his mentor, Major Grant, was killed by John McClane, Stuart watched in glee.
- Not only does Stuart refuse to show any remorse for his actions, but he views those same actions with defiance and pride.
- Overall, he lacks any enjoyable traits (outside of his skill in some martial arts giving John McClane some tension) and is portrayed as almost completely unlikable. Even Hans Gruber from the first film, despite also being pure evil, had a lot more likable traits then Stuart, being an MB.
Trivia[]
- William Sadler, Stuart's actor, takes it as a compliment when people say that they hated his character as even he interprets Stuart as being irredeemably evil.
