~ Fudge upon seeing Lord Voldemort is alive and in person, as well as realising his horrible mistakes. |
Cornelius Fudge is a major antagonist in the Harry Potter series. He was the British Minister for Magic who was incompetent at best and a corrupt tyrant at worst.
He was portrayed by the late Robert Hardy.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Despite initially appearing as good-natured and well-meaning, by the end of Goblet of Fire and in Order of the Phoenix he reveals his true colors as a corrupt, selfish, greedy, cowardly and hypocritical politician who will go to extremes to keep control over the Ministry of Magic.
- He is extremely prejudiced, favouring people of the upper class and pure-bloods, and discriminates against half or non-human races.
- He takes Rubeus Hagrid to Azkaban over false allegations of him opening the Chamber of Secrets and helps remove Albus Dumbledore from Hogwarts for a short time, albeit reluctantly.
- He refuses to believe Harry Potter's report that Lord Voldemort has returned, despite strong evidence supporting his statement.
- He launches a smear campaign against Harry and Dumbledore, slandering the former as an attention-seeking liar and the latter as trying to usurp his position as Minister, to cover up the truth of Voldemort's resurrection.
- He also tries to have Harry expelled from Hogwarts via an unfair trial.
- This also shows how ungrateful he is to Dumbledore, who often assisted and advised him in his job.
- He gave Dolores Umbridge control of Hogwarts, establishing her reign of terror.
- After finally seeing he had been wrong about Voldemort, he still tried to remain in office and even asked Dumbledore for Harry to lie on his behalf instead of taking responsibility for his actions and attempting to make amends.
- He makes a stupid move of trying to have Aurors to arrest Dumbledore even after witnessing Voldemort's return, but none of them respond as they see Fudge for who he truly is. Also, Dumbledore gives Fudge a serious speech about Voldemort's return, making Fudge realise that he will lose everything, which is Laser-Guided Karma.
- Overall, he cared far more about his position as Minister of Magic than the safety of the world he was assigned to protect.
