Corporal Spivey is the secondary antagonist of Kevin Costner's 1990 film Dances with Wolves. He is a U.S. Army corporal who was responsible for stealing John Dunbar's journal.

He was portrayed by Tony Pierce.

What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]

  • He stole Dunbar's journal simply because he was illiterate. When asked about the journal, Spivey denies any awareness of the journal that supports Dunbar's claims of being with the Sioux tribe and only kept it because he was afraid that he would be punished for petty theft. This leads to Dunbar being branded as a traitor by the U.S. Army and almost leads him to be hanged for desertion as a result.
  • He uses Dunbar's journal as toilet paper alongside his friend, Edwards.
  • He tries to steal Dunbar's pendant from his breast plate, thinking he's sleeping.
  • He, along with the other soldiers, including Sergeant Bauer and Edwards, were responsible for killing Two Socks just for sport.
  • He proceeds to beat up Dunbar after the latter strangled him in an attempt to stop him from shooting Two Socks before he was stopped by Lieutenant Elgin, who threatened to put him in shackles if he continued bashing Dunbar.
  • He and Edwards taunt Dunbar during their escort to Fort Hayes for his execution.
  • He was willing to participate in the Army's attempts to subjugate the Sioux tribe Dunbar befriended.

Trivia[]

  • The corporal that stole Dunbar's journal in the original book by Michael Blake was originally named Sheets and he didn't assist in Dunbar's escort to Fort Hayes.
