NOTE: This page is only about the anime version of Damian, as his counterpart in The Electric Tale of Pikachu is not counted as a Hate Sink. Thus, only the anime version of Damian's information should be put here. |
Damian (known as Daisuke in the Japanese version) is a one-shot antagonist in the Pokémon anime, appearing as the main antagonist in the Kanto episode Charmander – The Stray Pokémon. He was once the trainer for Ash's Charizard, but decided to abandon it in the rain upon believing how weak it is, and decides to return only for its power, not its heart.
In the original Japanese version he was voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa. In the English version he was voiced by the late Maddie Blaustein in the Kanto series and Eli James in the Black and White series.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He abandoned his own Charmander on a rock, believing it to be too weak, before lying to it by claiming he would return for him later. To make things worse, Ash and friends find out that if a Charmander's tail flame gets extinguished it will die, meaning that his negligence nearly got Charmander killed.
- He laughs over the idea of Charmander still waiting for him.
- When Brock confronts his treatment of Charmander and how it could die out in the rain waiting for him, Damian remorselessly expresses how he doesn't care over it.
- He attempts to pick a fight with Ash, Misty and Brock over his treatment of Charmander in a Pokémon Center. When Nurse Joy intervenes, he pins the blame on them rather than acknowledging that he was the one who started it.
- When boasting about his Pokémon, he shows ten Poké Balls. Trainers are only allowed six Pokémon, so either most of the Pokéballs are empty (meaning he is lying) or he is breaking a major rule of Pokémon training and battles. Either scenario is detestable.
- He openly states how he doesn't bother to actually train his Pokémon, instead wanting immediately strong Pokémon. This shows his willingness to cut corners.
- Although he tries to take Charmander back, this is only after he sees it beat Team Rocket with Ash's guidance, not from a change in heart.
- He gets his comeuppance when Charmander refuses to rejoin his team and deflects his Poké Ball, hitting him in the face. Angered by Charmander's rejection, he tried to go all-out on it with his huge supply of Poké Balls, filled with his other Pokémon.
- However, this causes Charmander and Ash's Pikachu to hurt him with a combination of Flamethrower and Thunder Shock, causing the latter runs away sobbing and scared, never to be seen again, making it very satisfying.
Trivia[]
- Only the anime version of Damian counts, since The Electric Tale of Pikachu depicts his personality to be the complete opposite, being a kind, caring Trainer that joyfully reunited with Charmander after searching for it for ten days.
- Damian's role as an abusive Trainer whose Pokémon would later be rescued by Ash would later be reused by several other characters throughout the series, such as Paul, Shamus, Cross and the former trainer of Gengar (though Paul and Cross would later redeem themselves).
