Darkwing is a major antagonist in the 2024 animated film Transformers One. He is a soldier who only swears allegiance to Sentinel Prime and the corrupt government alongside Airachnid. As a member of Sentinel Prime's empire, he is well-known to be a strict enforcer who supervises the Energon Miners.
He was voiced by Isaac C. Singleton Jr.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- Darkwing exhibits ableism/classism towards cogless Cybertronians, taking sadistic pleasure in abusing them.
- To say that he has severe anger issues would be an massive understatement.
- He's shown to be very egotistical just because he has a cog, which is something that's not unnatural at all until Sentinel's regime where he removed the cogs of most people, which means it's only thanks to Sentinel's artificial system that he look "superior" to the miners.
- Because of how he prefer brute strength over thinking, he tend to make moves that would only backfire, which also show his lack of intelligence:
- Elita is one of the most efficient and hard-working captain, and firing her would brought nothing but disadvantages.
- He never once thought that physically hurting the miners would only weaken them even more than they already are, making mining even more difficult.
- He unjustly fired Elita-1 from her position as Captain of the Energon Mines following the sudden collapse during a mining operation, despite the fact that it was primarily due to the actions of Orion Pax (Optimus Prime) and D-16 (Megatron), but Elita bore the blame. When Elita confronted him about the unfair dismissal, he rudely replied, "You are no-cog bots with limited options," before demoting her to waste management.
- It's implied he even physically beat up Elita in the past as Elita flinches very hard when he simply pointed at her as if she's afraid of him.
- While his anger at Orion flipping him off is reasonable, he deserved it for firing Elita for no reason and when D-16 tried to pardon Darkwing about Orion's actions, he still didn't care and instead punched D-16 in the face just for interfering.
- Not only does he consider Orion's action of saving a miner from death as an act of violating the protocol, rather than being impressed by it, but he even lacked the decency to ask if there was anyone that got hurt from the incident, as the first thing he does is firing Elita.
- The novelization even shows him getting into a fight with D-16 and Orion with everyone trying to break it up.
- He knowingly endangered everyone in the race by attacking D-16 and Orion Pax. Darkwing sabotaged D-16 by damaging his jetpack after bumping into him, preventing him from winning the race.
- His defeat in the Iacon 5000 is pure karma when he tried to sabotage the two earlier.
- He punished Orion and D-16 by throwing them into sublevel 50 for their interference in the Iacon 5000 race, hoping they would lose their sanity like Bumblebee, who formed an obsession with objects and gave them names. This was despite Sentinel Prime's efforts to pragmatically motivate the miners. When Orion and D-16 protest against this punishment, Darkwing refuses to listen and angrily yells at them, declaring that he will ensure they never leave Sub-Level 50.
- Orion has even expressed how much he despises Darkwing.
- Unbeknownst to Darkwing, his actions will ultimately lead to Sentinel's downfall. Orion and D-16 discover a distress beacon from Alpha Trion, which guides them, along with Elita-1 and Bumblebee, in their search for the Matrix of Leadership. This interference threatens to derail Sentinel's plans, all because of Darkwing's personal grudge. As a result, he inadvertently contributes to the deterioration of the friendship between Orion Pax and D-16, turning them into adversaries reminiscent of Optimus Prime and Megatron.
- He was so petty that he never thought about the consequences of defying Sentinel's orders, since if Sentinel questions about it, he wouldn't be able to give out a good excuse to convince him, and would end up getting a punishment. While he did get away scot-free, it was only thanks to Sentinel's lack of regard toward other lives that this happens, which means he only got away thanks to pure luck, not because he worked and weaseled his way out of it.
- After Darkwing received new orders from Sentinel Prime to force the miners to work triple shifts for more Energon, he attempted to punch Ironhide for talking back to him. Ironhide pointed out that the miners were getting tired and needed a break. However, before Darkwing could act, he was stopped and then punched by a newly upgraded and larger Orion Pax. As a result, Darkwing ended up trapped under an arcade cabinet, receiving the karma he deserved for placing Orion and D-16 at sublevel 50.
- The fact that Orion was able to knock him out with only a single punch, despite having only recently acquired a cog and initially struggling to transform, highlights just how much of a pathetic fighter Darkwing truly is when matched against someone of his own size.
- Even without a cog, D-16 effortlessly caught Darkwing’s punch, demonstrating not only Darkwing's weakness but also that the only thing holding back the miners is their lack of cogs.
- This overall show that behind his intimidation, he's nothing more than a paper tiger who only prey on the weak and is easily defeated when against someone his own size.
- There's no proof that he's in any way loyal to Sentinel since he not only defy his order to bring Orion and D-16 to his personal establishment over his own personal grudge, but the only time he follows Sentinel's order is to oppress the miners to triple their works was motivated only out of his petty grudge against them.
- Overall, the existence of cogged people like him show how little to no value cogless miners are treated in this dystopian society, as not only do they have to work in dangerous conditions with no safety measures, but also were left behind to die if things derail.
- Barring with Sentinel Prime, he's easily one of the movie's most hatable character.
- As a representation of the classism and discrimination against the miners (and by extension, the minorities), Darkwing's crimes are portrayed very realistically. Racist people like him do exist in the real world even in this modern time.
