Derek Dietl is a minor antagonist of DreamWorks' Monsters vs. Aliens franchise.
He is a weather reporter who was the ex-fiancé of Susan Murphy, whom he dumped once he saw her as Ginormica, thinking that her gigantic state would affect his popularity. Clearly, Susan herself was devastated by such selfish decision of his.
In the original film, he was voiced by Paul Rudd. In the television series, he was voiced by Nolan North.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- While he acts like he's genuinely in-love with Susan Murphy (later Ginormica), it gradually becomes clear that he cares more about his career than he does about his love interest throughout the film.
- He decides to rearrange on his plans to go to Paris with Susan Murphy without even consulting it with Susan first, though Susan forgives him for it regardless.
- He decides to break up with Ginormica simply so that she doesn't overtake him in popularity, which was a selfish move on his end.
- While he later decides to try and take Ginormica back, this isn't out of altruism, as he claims that he forgives her when he should be the one to apologize.
- Ginormica eventually decides that she would be better off without him (as she had made friends with a quartet of monsters and was willing to stay giant to rescue them), as he is a selfish jerk. B.O.B. decides that he would be better off without him as well (though he is unaware that Derek wasn't dating him). Him being called out by the both of them is played for satisfaction.
- In the television series, he breaks into Area Fifty-Something to snoop around, and when he discovered Ginormica/Susan can now switch between sizes, he tries to win her back again, only to be rejected again, which he deserved. It was presumed he was homeless for the rest of his life or has been arrested for his actions.
- Unlike Gallaxhar, Coverton, and Sta'abi, who were at least entertaining and do have a few redeeming qualities, Derek is simply a mere human being who lacked any characteristic traits that would at least make him likable.
