Diodora Astaroth is a major antagonist in the light novel and anime series High School DxD, serving as an unseen antagonist in Volume 1 and the secondary antagonist of Volume 6.
He was the former supposed heir of the Astaroth Clan until he betrayed his family and kind when he sided with the Khaos Brigade for power. He was the younger brother of Ajuka Beelzebub, and the mastermind responsible for Asia Argento's excommunication from her church. He is also the self-proclaimed love rival and foremost enemy of Issei Hyoudou for kidnapping and harassing Asia.
He is voiced by Makoto Furukawa in the Japanese version and Aaron Dismuke in the English dub.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Puts on a kind and gentle facade, while in reality he is anything but that. For no other reason than his perverted obsession over nuns and maidens, he would deceive them by having them banished from their respective churches and rape them to further their despair. After he was done taking advantage of them, he would reincarnate them into devils to be a part of his peerage (or in other words, have them pledge their loyalty to him as his slaves).
- Unlike Riser, a similar pervert, he has absolutely zero honor or loyalty. He is a complete sore loser and hypocritical coward who manipulates events to his advantage and throws a toddler-like tantrum when things don't go his way.
- He has no honor towards his family, even betraying them for power. His actions also indirectly caused his former clan to be outcasted from others.
- Similar to the Old Satan Faction, he prides himself as a high-class devil and considers Issei a "filthy dragon", despite the source of his overconfidence being his consumption of a snake from the Ouroboros Dragon Ophis, even believing he can take on Sairoarg. Not to mention the only reason nobody ever killed him is simply because it would have started a political war, not his undeserved sense of pride.
- He cheated in his fight against Agares by using a snake from Ophis and proceeded to brag about defeating her later.
- He tricked Asia into healing him as he purposely wounded himself for the sake of adding her to his collection. This later results in Asia being banished from her church, making Diodora indirectly responsible for her fate and death under Raynare. Although he did try to save her and kill Raynare himself, he only does it for the sake of manipulating her until he made a grave mistake in underestimating Issei as he continued watching.
- He attempted to get Asia to fall for him through numerous methods like:
- Proposing to her right in front of Issei.
- Sending her numerous invitations and gifts just to have her affection for him, making her rather uncomfortable with it.
- Inviting himself into Issei's house and attempting to negotiate Rias into trading bishops to get Asia into his collection of nuns and maidens. However, this led to revealing his true nature right in front of her when he ridiculed Issei for being a "dragon".
- He sabotaged the scheduled Rating Games just so he could snatch Asia away from Issei and the rest in a rather perverted and cowardly manner while having his peerage fight against them, making multiple hideous smiles while doing so.
- He has no care for his peerage. He brainwashed them through a spell to fight against Issei's Dress Break ability. This is further shown when he allowed Freed Sellzen to eat and kill two of his knights just so he could mutate into a chimera from it.
- When confronted by Issei and the rest, he bragged that he will attempt to murder them all just to crush Asia's hope as he thought about raping her while she called out Issei's name. This kind of action earned Issei's hatred for him to the point everyone in the room, including Rias and Ddraig, would allow him to give Diodora his comeuppance.
- Throws a temper tantrum when he is on the losing end of his fight with Issei, being unable to understand how he could possibly be defeated. At one point, he hides behind a magic barrier and proceeds to laugh at Issei, thinking he won, only for Issei to break it in seconds.
- In a cowardly last-ditch attempt at victory, he reveals that the trap Asia was put in actually had an absorbing device that would have stripped Asia of her life force in case he lost. This action of his definitely proved how much he always saw Asia as nothing more than an object and a "property of his", to the point where if he couldn’t have her, no one should have.
- After Asia was freed, he smugly attempted to ask Shalba to work with him into killing Issei and the others but it proved to be his downfall when Shalba killed him, although he deserved it for what he did to Asia and the rest of the nuns and holy maidens.
- He stands out as the most personal enemy of Issei due to unforgivably having the arrogance to make Asia cry and intending to rape her personally just to spite Issei after he killed him. Also, unlike some of the villains (such as Cao Cao), he has lacked any excuse, comedic factors or any certain redeeming qualities as he committed his actions for the sole purpose of his perverted desires.
