“ | Now let me make this, quite plain, you have been told, that a certain, dark, wizard, is at large once again. This, is, a, lie! | „ |
~ Dolores Umbridge falsely claiming Lord Voldemort has not returned. |
“ | That's right, because you know, deep down, you deserve to be punished. Don't you, Mr. Potter? | „ |
~ Dolores Umbridge after subjecting Harry to torture. |
Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge is a major antagonist in the Harry Potter franchise. She is the main antagonist of Order of the Phoenix, and then a minor antagonist in Deathly Hallows.
She was a Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic under three successive ministers: Cornelius Fudge, Rufus Scrimgeour, and Pius Thicknesse. Umbridge was designated as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by order of the Cornelius Fudge in 1995 and was later promoted to Hogwarts High Inquisitor and eventually Headmistress. This was part of a Fudge's effort to tyrannically keep the school and Harry under control. She was removed from these positions later on in 1996, when Voldemort was revealed to be alive, and returned to the Ministry, working as a judge under Voldemort's supremacist reign.
She was portrayed by Imelda Staunton in the films.
What Makes Her a Hate Sink?[]
- She shows massive bigotry towards part-humans such as centaurs, werewolves, and half-giants and in the books, is responsible for an anti-werewolf legislation that made it difficult for Lupin to get a job.
- In the novels, it's revealed that she sent the two Dementors after Harry and Dudley. If Harry hadn't been able to cast a Patronus to defend himself, both boys would've gotten kissed and thus suffered a fate worse than death.
- She lies at Harry's hearing that the Ministry wasn't involved in the Dementor attack and votes to convict Harry and expel him from Hogwarts.
- She doesn't teach the students at Hogwarts anything about Defence Against the Dark Arts, thus potentially dooming many of them to be killed upon Voldemort's arrival.
- She punishes dissident students by making them use the blood quill, which magically carves words into their flesh if they write on paper. In the films, this also includes first-year students who are 11 or 12 years old.
- She passes a series of Educational Decrees to try to bring every aspect of life at Hogwarts under her control.
- She tries to evict Professor Trelawney from Hogwarts. If McGonagall and Dumbledore weren't there to bring her back in, anything bad that happened to Trelawney outside of the school would be entirely Umbridge's fault since she had nowhere else to go.
- She kicks Harry and the Weasley twins off the Quidditch team and confiscates their broomsticks for fighting with Malfoy.
- After Albus Dumbledore’s position was taken by her, she made the entire school a completely totalitarian that most students and teachers want to make her as miserable as possible, which is really satisfying.
- When she tried to get in the headmaster’s office, the gargoyles refuse to let her in or acknowledge her as one.
- Many students, especially Fred and George, pull many pranks and mayhem that other professors have no problem with that issue to as like swamp in the hallway, loud fireworks, etc. forcing her to deal with all those problems in contrast to the rest that they can deal with it quickly.
- In the books she tries to evict Hagrid from Hogwarts at night by sending multiple Ministry officials, and when McGonagall tries to intervene they shoot her with multiple Stunning Spells in the chest at the same time, which nearly kills her and ends up sending her to the hospital for a week.
- She tries to torture Harry for information using the Cruciatus Curse.
- She cowardly freaks out and begs for mercy when faced with centaurs in the Forbidden Forest, even hiding behind Harry and Hermione at first, which is in sharp contrast to Snape who actually hides children behind him when faced with a werewolf (although that was only in the movie, as he was knocked out by Harry, Hermione and Ron at the time in the book).
- When Dumbledore returns after Voldemort confirmed his return, she tried to leave only to encounter students and Peeve to give her a final humiliation.
- After Alastor Moody's death, she stole his magical eye and used it to spy on her workers.
- She persecutes Muggle-born wizards and witches under false accusations of stealing magic, sentencing them to be either kissed by Dementors or sent to Azkaban.
- She’s constantly compared to an amphibious toad, even by Mundungus Fletcher, to highlight how disgusting she is.
- While not a Death Eater like Voldemort or Bellatrix, Umbridge stands out as one the most loathsome characters due to how realistic her threat level is. She's hardly any different from the typical abusive teacher or official you're bound to encounter in real life.
- Even Imelda Staunton hates her own character, calling her a "bloody monster" and a "completely and utterly deluded woman". As if that was not bad enough, even J.K. Rowling has come out and said that she was loosely based on a teacher that Rowling hated, showing how negative even her own author views her.
- As confirmed by J.K. Rowling she is able to effortlessly produce a perfect Patronus during her trials due to the immense joy and happiness she has in torturing people and sending them to Azkaban.
