Dr. Udo Heinemann is a minor antagonist in Naoki Urasawa's manga/anime series Monster. He is the corrupt director of Eisler Memorial Hospital, who only cares about his own greed and profit, and is willing to let patients die for his own gain.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- He steals the credit for the work of more talented and competent doctors and publishes their research under his own name.
- He orders Dr. Tenma to abandon surgery on an injured Turkish man so he can operate on a famous opera singer, who had arrived later. This results in the Turkish man's death. When Tenma shows remorse for this, Heinemann coldly tells him that money and success are far more important than the lives of ordinary people.
- He holds a press conference where he steals the credit for the surgery on the opera singer, not mentioning Tenma at all.
- He cancels life-saving research Tenma is working on, so that Tenma can write a speech for him.
- He orders Tenma to abandon surgery on Johan and let him die, despite thinking that Johan is an innocent child.
- He attempts to destroy Tenma's career for saving Johan's life against his orders, demoting Tenma from his position as head neurosurgeon, and says that as long as he's in charge, Tenma will be blacklisted and won't be allowed to transfer to another hospital. He then gloats that Tenma will never be the doctor he dreamed of, which causes even the pacifistic Tenma to lose his cool and state in a moment of anger that Heinemann would be better off dead.
- He is involved in corrupt deals with other hospital directors so that they will vote for him to become the next medical board chairman.
- He orders his men to take a photo of Johan and his sister to show to the media, as an "emergency image-saver" for the hospital. When he learns Dr. Tenma would object to this, he removes Tenma from caring for Johan, saying he doesn't want Tenma to get any media attention.
- He steals candy that Johan was sent as a get-well present. This leads to his own death, as Johan had predicted this and poisoned the candy.
