Dr. Royce Hemlock is the main antagonist of the 2021 Disney+ animated Star Wars series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, introduced in the second half of season 2.
He is one of the head scientists of the Galactic Empire's cloning program and operates a black site that oversees experiments too cruel and abhorrent to be associated with the Empire directly, hence its clandestine foundation.
He is voiced by Jimmi Simpson.
What Makes Him Despisable?[]
- While he did care for Emerie Karr at first as he saved her from being terminated by the Kaminoans, this gets subverted as time went on as he began threatening her life.
- He interrogates Lama Su until he reveals that Nala Se is looking for Omega.
- Like all Imperials, he hates clones, to the extent that he views them as property instead of people.
- When his cloned Zillo Beast goes on a rampage in a village, he orders Scorch and his commandos to arrest anyone who saw the creature, including children. A later comment by Scorch heavily implies that they will all be executed.
- After having Crosshair detained for killing Lieutenant Nolan, he interrogates him for information on where to find Clone Force 99.
- When Crosshair refuses to comply, he has a probe droid inject him, and he sadistically grins as he gets tortured, crossing his first Moral Event Horizon.
- He has no problem with Crosshair killing Lieutenant Nolan; he in fact praises him for it.
- When Crosshair tries to escape, he releases a toxin to stop him.
- He assists Cid in her betrayal against Clone Force 99 with no hesitation.
- Accompanied by his clone commandos, he subdues Hunter and Wrecker and sadistically taunts Hunter on Tech's demise as he throws his broken goggles towards Hunter. He then threatens to kill them if they don't surrender Omega to him.
- When Omega reveals herself and tells him to let Hunter and Wrecker go, he sucessfully kidnaps her and brings her to Mount Tantiss, where she will used as leverage against Nala Se.
- He still tries to have Hunter, Wrecker, and Echo killed even after he has Omega.
- While he has many moments where he acts sophisticated, they are portrayed as very dark and morbid and make him even scarier.
- When an Imperial shuttle crashes in the wilderness outside his facility, he refuses to send help and lets the crew die.
- He keeps several lurca hounds in captivity as guard dogs, all of which he treats horribly and euthanizes when he decides they are no longer of use.
- When Omega begins to show defiance while in captivity, he threatens to kill Crosshair to keep her in line.
- He assists in the Emperor's cloning experiments and is implied to know that he is a Sith.
- He creates and controls the brainwashed CX clone assassins which commit several atrocities. These include attempting to assassinate Senator Riyo Chuchi, wiping out most of Rex’s clone resistance, and invading Pabu.
- His experiments and torture extend to Force-sensitive children kidnapped by bounty hunters, which he refers to by specimen numbers in order to dehumanize them.
- He has Omega kidnapped again and this time puts her in the vault with the other Force-sensitive children.
- He sends his CX clone assassins after Clone Force 99, resulting in Crosshair’s shooting hand being amputated.
- After capturing Clone Force 99, he tries to turn them into CX assassins. He tells them that if they do not survive the process, he will just test on more clones.
- He unleashes his clone assassins on the escaping clone prisoners, killing several in gruesome ways. He later personally gases the room they are in, inflicting further casualties.
- When Omega tries to free the other Batch members, he catches her in the act and reiterates his hatred of clones.
- With his research destroyed and his prisoners all freed, he handcuffs himself to Omega and tries to flee with her.
- He holds Omega at gunpoint and threatens to throw her off the bridge with him.
- He is truly a coward as he begs for Hunter and Crosshair to stand down at the face of death while throwing a temper tantrum.
- His death is played for satisfaction and stress relief as he is repeatedly shot by Crosshair and Hunter, getting revenge for all of his heinous actions.
