Dr. Zander Rice is the main antagonist of the 2017 film Logan, the overarching antagonist of its 2020 spin-off film The New Mutants, and one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Paradox) of the 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine.
He is the surgical head of Alkali-Transigen and the leader/employer of Donald Pierce and the Reavers, who engineered the near extinction of the mutant race while also raising mutant kids to serve as soldiers. After some of Transigen's nurses help some of the children escape, Rice sends Pierce to go after Wolverine, who is trying to take X-23, one of Rice's "experiments", to the Eden. He is based on the same character from the Marvel Comics' Innocence Lost.
He was portrayed by Richard E. Grant.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He kidnapped and tortured to death a large number of mutants, and also owned an orphanage in which mutant children were subjected to cruel and painful experiments, many of whom died and some committed suicide. He also ordered the euthanasia of mutant children, from whom it did not work out to make super-soldiers.
- He is a rather unpleasant and rude man who ordered his subordinates to treat mutant children like animals.
- He had several Mexican girls kidnapped and forcibly impregnated with mutant embryos for the X-23 project, before killing them after they gave birth.
- He releases X-24 to the farm, which leads to the deaths of Professor X and the Munson family, watching this brutal massacre with admiration.
- He is indirectly responsible for the events of Deadpool & Wolverine, due to the death of Logan causing Paradox forcing the Time Variance Authority to destroy Earth-10005 with the Time Ripper as an excuse to "test" it out.
- Unlike his comic book version, here he did not care at all about his father, who died at the hands of Wolverine, but only casually mentions him once, without showing any signs of regret.
- Unlike William Stryker and Bolivar Trask, he has no justified motives and good intentions at all. He's just a heartless scientist who almost destroyed the entire mutant world out of greed and malice. While his second-in-command Pierce is equally monstrous, he's at least entertaining and has an element of coolness to him. Rice has nothing like that.
