Drake is the main antagonist of Don Bluth's 8th full-length animated feature film, The Pebble and the Penguin.
He is a highly narcissistic Adelie Penguin with a muscular physique. Once a member of the Rookery, he sought to force Marina to become his mate as well as dispose of her sweetheart, Hubie.
He was voiced by Tim Curry, who also voiced Rex Pester in The Rugrats Movie, Slagar the Cruel in Redwall, and Von Talon in Valiant.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- In general, Drake is an anti-thesis to Hubie's character, being callous, abusive, vain, manipulative, cruel and egotistical.
- He hates Hubie all because the latter is the one Marina has romantic feelings for, making his comtempt for Hubie come off as nothing but petty hatred.
- He torments Hubie both physically and verbally with him calling him names such as "Little wimp" and "Penguin nerd", tripping him from behind a rock and making him fall face-first, and saying that no girl is going to marry a "loser" like him to his face.
- At one point, he goes as far to mock Hubie's stuttering speech, which hints Drake's prejudice towards stuttering people.
- He acts like a lecherous creep Marina, not to mention that he attempts to force her to be his mate and shows a complete lack of respect for Marina's boundaries also.
- Furthermore, Drake's sole reason for wanting Marina as his mate is for her beauty, rather than any of her other traits.
- He shows absolutely no sympathy to Marina when Hubie has gone missing for days. In fact, Drake lied that he deeply sympathizes, but then covers it up by trying to propose to Marina, further highlighting him as the emotionally manipulative liar he is.
- He is hypocritical with his treatment towards his minions, as he would snap at them when they're goofing off. But, the narrative suggests that he has encouraged his goons to laugh their heads off with him the entire time as some scenes show him to be completely fine with them acting silly.
- The narrative implies that he lied to the rookery about Hubie dying from the Leopard Seal digesting him. Marina was the only one to see past his lies, knowing from the getgo of how cruel Drake really is.
- While he has a few comedic moments, they do not detract from how awful he is, with the story's narrative and the characters taking him completely seriously.
- Though he suffered a gruesome fate of being crushed to death by his own lair collapsing, he had that coming for his heinous crimes.
