Elmo Blatch is the overarching antagonist of the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption along with the book's film adaptation The Shawshank Redemption.
He is a sadistic, murderous thief who despite making a very brief appearance, manages to be one of the most prominent characters in the story, with it being revealed that he was the one who had killed Andy Dufresne's wife and her lover, which winded up getting Andy falsely accused of murdering them due to leaving no evidence.
He was portrayed by Bill Bolender.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- The only reason for his existence within the film was to be used as a narrative device for Andy to be falsely convicted of murdering his wife and having to serve two life sentences in Shawshank Prison, with him having absolutely no relevance outside of that other than to be the instigator of Andy's years of pain.
- He has a cruel and deplorable personality, showing full sadism in killing two people and his crime getting pinned on the innocent Andy, with him laughing about it and clearly finding it amusing, making him incredibly unlikable.
- Despite instigating the events of the entire film, Elmo never receives any actual repercussions for his actions, with him being locked up in a much less cruel prison for a completely different crime, with him getting off with killing Andy's ex-wife and her lover, and causing Andy to be locked in Shawshank for a crime he never committed.
