Looks like Redd White has blackmailed this character with information that they are not a hate sink! The information reads: Exaggeration – he is not hateable enough to be on this Wiki. Please discuss it on the talk page here. |
The nameless Fight Promoter is a minor character in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2002 film. He is indirectly responsible for the events of Peter Parker becoming a crime fighter.
He was played by Larry Joshua.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is greedy person, cheating Peter out of the prize money he rightfully earned.
- His justification is that the $3000 prize was for anyone who could last three minutes in the ring with Bonesaw McGraw, and Peter KO'd him in two minutes. This is a particularly petty case of loophole abuse, as Peter actually went above and beyond the requirements, as he didn't just last three minutes against Bonesaw, but outright defeated him, and if anything, the fact he did it so quickly makes it more impressive.
- If anything, even if Peter did last two minutes, he should've been given $2000 if the math is done correctly.
- While the novelization implies that the wrestling show may have been staged and Peter didn't stick to the script, thus justifying the promoter being a bit peeved with him, only giving Peter one thirtieth of the promised reward money instead of two thirds, half, or even one third, and saying Peter was lucky to even receive $100 is still pretty stingy.
- When Peter states that he needs the money, the promoter quips "I missed the part where that's my problem", showing that he has never cared about anyone but himself.
- He is very entitled, expecting Peter to have stopped Dennis Carradine when he stole the remaining $2900 despite having just cheated him.
- He was created to make Peter more sympathetic, as in the comics, Peter refused to stop the Burglar just because he was feeling selfish at the time, having grown tired of being picked on at school, and decided he would only look out for himself and those close to him. By having the victim of the thief be someone who just cheated Peter, Peter's refusal to stop the thief becomes more understandable, as it was his way of getting back at the person who cheated him rather than Peter just being selfish at the time, and it served as the promoter's well-deserved karma.
- If he had not cheated Peter, Carradine wouldn't have shown up at the wrong moment with the stolen prize money and startled Flint Marko, causing his gun to misfire and kill Ben. In short, the promoter not only cheated Peter out of his money and brought Peter's refusal to stop Carradine upon himself, but also indirectly contributed to Ben's death.
- His actions also indirectly led to Flint becoming the Sandman due to his arrest of accidentally murdering Ben.
