Foreman Spike (originally called Blacky in Japan) is the main antagonist of Wrecking Crew.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is the first true villain faced by Mario (Donkey Kong being more of a rampaging animal than a true villain). While Mario and Donkey Kong had both had outings as antagonists, Spike is the first character introduced as a baddie to remain unchanged throughout his showings.
- In his debut, Spike represented the trope of the "bad boss", being a greedy demolition foreman who sabotaged his own workers (Mario and Luigi) and hindered their progress so he could finish the job all by himself and not have to share any of the profit with them. This also depicts him as "stupid evil", as having to do the job by himself would be much harder and hardly worth the effort for the money. Furthermore, if his contractors were to find out about this, he would almost certainly be out of a job.
- In Wrecking Crew '98, he is working for Bowser, helping him build new hideouts, not caring that the construction of them will deprive the plants of sunlight, making him an environment damaging villain, which are well known as hate sinks. Spike also straight up tries to kill Mario in this game.
- Unlike other villains or antagonist like Bowser and Wario, he has no redeeming features or cool factors.
Trivia[]
- His counterpart from the 2023 Super Mario Brothers Movie does not count, as he ends up redeeming himself in the end.
- So far, his video game counterpart is the only canonical Hate Sink from the Mario franchise.
